Essie Michelle and Maurice Sullivan, creators of the popular YouTube channel Essie & Maurice, are known for popping up with head-turning looks all over social media. So it’s no surprise that they pulled out all the stops for their engagement photoshoot in Morocco, which has since gone viral.
ESSENCE spoke with Essie about her and Maurice’s love story, which began almost a decade ago. “We met through my cousin in high school,” she recalls. “He didn’t really know me, but I knew him! I admired him from afar and even called him my boyfriend lol. One day my cousin told Maurice my interest in him, and then Maurice ended up sliding into my Facebook DMs and the rest is history!”
On the day they got engaged, Essie picked up on a few hints that Maurice had something big up his sleeve. He told her to make sure her nails were done, and mistakenly sent her a text that he meant for the invitees. None of that took away from the magic of the proposal. “I still cried tears of joy,” Essie said. “It was so beautiful.”
