The Big Day: November 17, 2012
Wedding Location: Brooklyn, NY
How did you meet your man?
Kelvin and I met at Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, New York — the biggest church in NYC, with over 35,000 members — nine years ago. He was giving a mutual friend of ours a ride home after service, and she asked if he could take me, too. Six months later, I moved to a different part of town, and began seeing him everywhere — in the grocery store, at the bank, on the subway, on the street. Finally, I stop and asked, “Do you live around here?” It turned out he lived exactly one block away and right around the corner from my new apartment. Three full years went by, then one Sunday I was rushing into church late and saw him and our soon-to-be best man talking in the foyer. God stopped me dead in my tracks with a revelation that would change my life. That’s your husband! Kelvin and I began dating a year later.
What was his first impression of you?
He jokes that when we met, I was asking him a million and one questions, he kept calling me Barbara Walters. But I was just making conversation.
Did you play hard to get?
I never really played hard to get with Kelvin, although I did try. Once I started becoming attractive to him, there was no denying it.
Describe your most romantic date ever.
Our most romantic date was the night he proposed to me.
What do you do for fun?
Since we have been bi-coastal for the last two and a half years, we really try to make each moment count. In LA, Kelvin and I enjoy outdoors activities — beach, hiking, grilling — and in New York we do dinner and Broadway shows.
What’s the sweetest thing he has ever done for you?
Not long after we met, I left town to do a show in Cleveland. Before leaving, I happened to mention to Kelvin how much I wished I could still hear our Pastor’s sermons while I was away. Well, once I began rehearsal, every single week I had a package in the mail. Kelvin sent me our Pastor’s sermon CD’s every week for two months, and every note was signed: To “Sister Edwina” from “Brother Kelvin.” It was so sweet.
Did you have a hunch he was going to propose?
I was hoping he would propose on my birthday, we had just finished taking pre-marital classes the week before at our church. But then he told me that we needed more classes and he just didn’t feel comfortable moving forward. He totally threw me off, so when he did propose on my birthday, I was completely amazed. He completely had me fooled!
