On January 1, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the island of Saint-Domingue free and independent from French rule after a successful revolution. Following this triumphant event, the world’s first free Black republic reintroduced itself as the island nation we now know as Haiti.
Despite less than appealing media portrayals and internal events that have often shaken the country to its core, the legacy of Haiti is an undeniable one. Much of the world stands on the shoulders of a proud people who sounded the alarm to fellow Blacks that we deserve freedom by any means necessary.
