Bajan Living
Nestled in the heart of the eastern Caribbean lies an independent island known as Barbados. The 21 miles long and 14 miles wide island is the only one in the region that boasts picturesque all white sand beaches, serene azure waters from the Caribbean Sea, rugged cliffs and a cerulean Atlantic Ocean. Currently celebrating 50 years of independence, Barbados is known for a number of customs and traditions that are passionately expressed through the rich history and vibrant Crop Over Festival. Filled with exceptional local fare some of the most charming people you’ll ever meet, here are 10 reasons why visiting this island is a must.

8. Rum on top of rum, on top of rum!
Three hundred and seventy years ago, Barbados became known as the birthplace of rum and the island is full of comprehensive tours that will take you through the world’s oldest rum. Make sure to stop by the Mount Gay Rum Visitor Centre to get the best rum you’ve ever tasted—and don’t forget to try the traditional Bajan rum punch!

9. Adorable Sea Turtles
Barbados is home to a healthy population of sea turtles – the hawksbill and leatherback turtles. If you’re in Barbados at the right time, you may just be lucky enough to see the eggs hatch, and watch the teeny newborn turtles emerge from the sand making their way to the sea.

10. Crop Over Festival
The Crop Over summer festival is Barbados’ most popular and colorful festival dating back to the 1780’s. It marks the finale of another successful sugar cane harvest and welcomes people from all walks of life. At any given moment, you are bound to see a number of celebrities. While Rihanna did not attend this year’s festivities, Lewis Hamilton, Chanel Iman and number of others did enjoy some downtime on the island.
