Actor David Oyelowo had triple the celebration for Easter this year. Not only did he celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his 50th birthday, but his eldest son, Asher, also recently got engaged. The Selma actor shared the news with his fans on social media, posting a series of photos to mark the occasion.
“My eldest son @asheryelo found his forever person!!!” he started the caption. The images included Asher, his mother Jessica Oyelowo, Asher’s new fiancée, and loved ones rocking native Nigerian attire. Some famous faces were celebrating with the family, including Ava DuVernay, Nate Parker, and Lupita Nyong’o.
“This was the greatest birthday gift I could possibly receive,” he added. “Thank you all for the birthday wishes this week. Wishing you all a beautiful and blessed Easter. Xx”
Asher shared a video of the proposal on his Instagram page with the caption, “Can’t wait to marry my best friend 🤍.”
In the clip, his soon-to-be bride, whose name is Mure Kalu, has her back turned, only for her to turn around and see him on one knee. She appeared both pleasantly surprised and in disbelief at the same time that the romantic moment was taking place. Kalu, of Nigerian background, is a singer and pianist who regularly shares videos of herself performing worship songs, along with uplifting, faith-based messages meant to inspire and encourage others.
Asher Oyelowo was born in October 2001 and has grown to become an artist in his own right. Outside of modeling, making his debut walking in a Dolce & Gabbana show in 2017, he’s also pursuing a career as a musician. He released his first EP, Mr. Misunderstood, in 2022 and continues to share his tunes on social media.
“I’d have to say that the chaotic and unexpected nature of life is my primary inspiration. Having such a diverse and multicultural background, alongside the many life experiences I’ve had — whether falling in love, experiencing loss, the beauty of community, and the darkness of isolation — inform the topics I touch on in music,” he said during an interview in September 2022 with Weekend Beats.
Asher’s parents are beaming with pride over the man he’s become, so it sounds like he’ll be a loving husband. His mother, Jessica, described him as “sweet and kind and fierce and passionate” in a May 2023 Instagram post.
“He is a man of faith and integrity, he knows who he is and will not compromise on anything,” she added. “He makes incredible music and is kind enough to always ask my opinion on his work. He made me a Mama and I could not be more proud of this beautiful man who is my son.”
David and Jessica are parents to three other children: Penuel, Caleb, and their only daughter, Zoe. Congratulations to the Oyelowo family!
