Black Women's Equal Pay Day: Marcia Dyson - 'Sometimes We Reduce The Value Of Our Own Labor'

Rachaell Davis Aug, 07, 2018

Activist and author Marcia Dyson has been a prominent voice in civic social activism and a champion of women’s rights for over two decades. Speaking specifically on the alarming pay gap between Black women and our white counterparts in the workspace during our first ever ESSENCE E-Suite event in New Orleans, Dyson shared that she believes both knowing and demanding our worth as Black women is half the battle in the fight for pay equality.

“Women are worth their work,” she says. “Not in broken pieces of glass, but in diamonds.”

As we stand together in observance of Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, watch the video above to hear the full message encouraging all women to #AskYourWorth and be fearless in demanding pay equality.
