Let’s be honest, appearance matters in corporate America. It’s what interviewers, bosses and colleagues notice first, even before you open your mouth to share all of those fabulous ideas. While a company should be more focused on how you can increase their bottom line, it really helps if the bottom of your shoes are in good shape too. Daisy Lewellyn, author of Never Pay Retail Again and star of Bravo’s Blood, Sweat, & Heels knows that dressing the part can make you more valuable at work. Here are four tips from the Queen of Chic that will help you move up the corporate ladder a little quicker.
A Signature Look
Whether it’s colored pant suits, flattering pencil skirt and cardigan combos, or a full on wardrobe of textured blacks with leather and studs, you want to discover your signature look. This look helps you to become easily identifiable on a regular and consistent basis. It helps you to start to build your brand amongst the brand that you’re employed by. If you care about the way you look, you send the message that you also care about the company.
Fake It ‘Til You Make It
If you are looking to advance your career and get a promotion, play the part now. It’s key to live in the reality that you desire before it manifests. So dress like you’re the CEO, or the Manager of your department. Show your company that you can take your salary and turn it into something exceptional. I can take a $10 an hour wage and make it look like a million bucks. The concept: No matter what, you are capable of creating a sizeable return, for both you and the company.
Invest In Hair
Invest in an amazing haircut that will establish your work look. Consider a good power bob or long Naomi Campbell classic look with bangs. When you invest in a good haircut, you never have to worry about a bad hair day. And if you really want effortless chic hair perfection, try rocking a wig. You’ll never have to fuss with the hair and it’ll always look flawless.
Always make sure that your clothes are pressed, hole and stain free. It’s unprofessional for an employee to not maintain a sense of cleanliness and grooming. Simple things like clean nails and moisturized hands can go a long way. Always keep a “Tide to Go” stick in your drawer, and a small makeup bag with deodorant, lotion, and breath mints just in case you have a mid-day mishap.
