Essence Summer Internship Program

The program is an 8-week paid learning experience where you’ll receive on-the-job training that will enhance your education and prepare you for a future career in the media industry. You must have an interest in media and issues related to African-American women to intern at ESSENCE. We are looking for students who are professional, self-motivated and extremely detail-oriented to take on opportunities throughout the various departments. As an Essence intern, you’ll be placed on a team based on your background, strengths and skills. Come prepared to grow, develop and learn alongside the leaders driving the future of the media landscape.

If you are currently an undergraduate or graduate student, then you are eligible to apply for an internship at Essence Communications Inc. in one of the following departments:

MARKETING
Develop “big idea” concepts for advertisers by conceptualizing and writing marketing proposals in response to RFPs. Work closely with Marketing Team to execute programs across digital, social and events.

CREATIVE
Assist with designing content for Print and Digital platforms, as well as the trafficking of projects. Portfolio review a must!

SOCIAL MEDIA
Work with the Social Media Team: researching topics, building analytics reports, collecting assets, developing content calendars, coordinating, and more tasks as assigned. Looking for a flexible, team player who’s passionate about utilizing data to drive epic consumer-facing moments.

PODCAST
Work with the Podcast Team and learn what it takes to make our hit shows come to life. Day to day operations, show production, talent booking and much more.

EDITORIAL
Assist with creating content for Print and Digital and Social Media platforms for Beauty, Lifestyle and News. Potential to work on brand specific video and photo shoots.

FINANCE
Work alongside finance teams to support the Accounting Team prepare monthly and quarterly reports and conduct ad hoc projects and reporting.

COMMUNICATIONS/PR
Assist in the execution and monitoring of ESSENCE publicity campaigns and media partnerships. Support the team in promoting brand content and initiatives, writing and distributing news releases, as well as media relations across print, digital, social media and live experiences.

EVENTS
Create and work with the Events Team to execute VIP and consumer driven events for the Essence Festival; list management, gift bag coordination, invoicing vendors, ordering décor items and more. Attend the Festival and managing post Festival organization.

VIDEO
Assist Video Team with numerous shoots. Edit footage, assist with research and help manage and set-up studio space.

LEGAL
Provide legal support to business teams and work with Senior Corporate Counsel in generating appropriate contracts, performing legal analysis, managing deal trackers and providing administrative support.

DIGITAL & PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Assist the digital team with all things digital ops. Definitely a role for those of you who love data. Steer the digital team to make sound decisions based upon insightful metrics. Work with clients in providing campaign wrap up reporting to story tell successes and wins and ROI from a client’s perspective. Sit in client meetings, work with marketing, sales planning, revenue operations to turn around marketing and media plans to clients to meet their KPIs and initiatives to get in front of the Essence and Naturally Curly user.

To apply for an ESSENCE internship, submit a resume and a cover letter that tells us why you would like to intern at Essence, a writing sample or a digital portfolio including your designs, video and/or photography, if applicable, to the position and a department(s) you may be interested in joining.

Our intern programs are paid.

Interns will be assigned to one department but will be exposed to other areas of the company.

Interns are expected to find their own housing. We suggest you contact your school’s career center for information on temporary housing in the New York City area. You may also want to contact New York City area colleges and universities to ask about renting a dormitory room for the summer.

The program runs from June 3rd until July 26th.

If I am under 21 years of age, I will not attend any company events at locations where alcohol is served. I agree that I will conduct myself in a professional manner. I promise that I will not remove company property from the premises and understand that by doing so, I will immediately be dismissed from my internship and my parents and/or supervisor will be contacted. Upon completion of my internship, my name badge and any access cards must be returned to the Program Administrator.
