Remember the adorable, huggable Kenya Doll from the 90s? She’s back — and with a special message for Black History Month.
After re-launching the doll in November, just in time for the holiday season, company Kenya’s World LLC sponsored a special February campaign tying into its mission to reflect the beauty and culture of children of color. In urban metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, Indianapolis, New York/Jersey City, and Baltimore/Washington, D.C., the company invited schoolchildren to enter an essay contest asking kids what being proud means to them. Winning students, selected by their principals, earned a cash prize plus money for their schools to be used for educational purposes.
And to wrap up our celebration of Black History Month, Kenya’s World LLC and ESSENCE.com will give away the pride-instilling doll on Twitter. Follow @essencemag on Twitter, and enter to win at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday (February 28). See rules here.
