Straight Talk: Why Hairlicious Inc. Doesn’t Use Keratin Treatments

Searching for an alternative way to achieve silky straight hair? Keratin straightening treatments have become the “go-to” option at salons for the past few years. Women typically flock to keratin treatments as they provide a pin straight look, frizz becomes a thing of the past, and as a bonus it shortens blow-dry time by 40-60 percent.Treatments can be done every 6 to 8 weeks. The main ingredient in the treatment is keratin, which is naturally found in our hair strands. The keratin protein, in the treatment, acts to naturally straighten as well as strengthen the hair. Although, there are benefits to keratin treatments, I chose not to use them in my hair for three reasons.

High Heat

Keratin treatments require the use of flat irons at 450 degrees to activate and seal in the treatment into the hair cuticle. Several passes with a high heat flat iron can cause severe breakage and damage to the hair.

It’s Expensive

Depending on where you go, expect to spend approximately $150-$300 for your treatment. Furthermore, treatments can take anywhere from 2-3 hours to complete from start to finish which is entirely too long for me in comparison to my relaxer time of 20-25 minutes.

Short-Term Results

Keratin treatments typically last 6 to 8 weeks and then your natural curl pattern returns. Depending on your lifestyle, this could be very inconvenient. Also, results vary depending on your texture. Some ladies may receive bone straight results for an extended time, while other ladies may only get them temporarily.

Everyone’s hair and preference is different. My advice to you is to be cautious when it comes to applying keratin treatments to your hair. Do your research and assess the pros and cons to see if it’s something that will work for your hair and lifestyle.
