Super Natural: MahoganyCurls on Protein and Silk Amino Acid Treatments

I recieve a lot of questions regarding protein and moisture balance for natural hair. To be honest, I have never been a fan of protein treatments because I feel they aren't needed for my curls. During the beginning of my natural hair journey my hair was very dry. My primary focus was increasing the moisture levels in my hair so that it would be soft. From my experience, I have learned that protein and silk amino acids treatments are great for our hair, but they are best used when you experience dry, damaged tresses. If you feel that you may need a protein or silk amino acid treatment, I suggest researching the treatments or contacting your stylist. Here are a few methods that work for me.

Condition Properly

If you decide to use a protein treatment, I suggest using a moisturizing conditioner after using the treatment on your hair. I have friends that use protein on a regular basis and their hair is fine. However for me, it is not necessary. My main focus for my hair is ensuring that it is moisturized properly.

Add Silk Amino Acids to Your Favorites

You can add a small amount of silk amino acids to your shampoo, conditioners, and even you stylers when you feel that your hair may need an extra boost of strength. Protein is great for rebuilding the structure of the hair and strengthening your coils. But, at the same time, if it isn’t used properly it can cause more damage to your hair. Use with caution!

Eat Greens
I receive a good amount of protein from fresh green vegetables and beans. I eat a lot of kale, which is packed with protein and is also great for strengthening your hair. Try it!
