Super Natural: MahoganyCurls On Minimizing Single Strand Knots

We all deal with single strand knots at some point during our natural hair journey. I noticed these teeny tiny knots in my hair a few months after my big chop. I remember it like yesterday: I was cowashing my hair and after rinsing the cowash out, I proceeded with my detangling session. As I was detangling my hair, I noticed that I my ends felt rough. I immediately had mistaken this for split ends and I decided to examine my hair after I had completed my cleaning process. Upon drying my hair, I noticed that I didn’t have split ends. Instead, I had really small knots. After researching this, I found out that they were known as fairy knots or single strand knots. Single strand knots occur when your hair curls onto itself. This forms a small knot on the strand, but thankfully there are ways to minimize them.

Finger Detangle

I learned that I could detangle the knots out by finger detangling and using a good amount of conditioner. This process may take a while depending on the size and tightness of the knot.

Dust Them

I usually remove the knots by dusting them (cutting) with scissors. Quick dusting (mini trims) is also very helpful when removing the knots. Depending on the number of knots that I have, I may dust once every 2 months.

Avoid Constant Wash and Gos

Avoiding frequent wash n gos has also prevented my hair from having so many single strand knots. Also, applying extra moisturizer or conditioner to my ends allowed my hair to stay hydrated, making it much easier to remove the knots. You can also do the same thing if you like to use oil. In the past, I have rolled my ends on perm rods. This is known as stretching your ends.

Truthfully, no matter how hard I try to get rid of the knots, I always seem to find them. I came to the realization that this is something that comes with the territory of having natural hair and I am fine with it.
