Super Natural: Afrobella’s Post-Festival Hair Recovery Tips

I saw your Instagram. And your tweets. And your Facebook statuses. And yes, I am jealous that I didn’t also go to this year’s Essence Music Festival – it looks like you had a blast! Also, I know how you feel. Exhausted, and your whole body hurts (especially your feet). I also know that your hair needs extra TLC this week, to help you fully restore your beauty and your well being post EF or any other summer event that involves high heat, humidity and sweating out your roots while dancing!

Shampoo Wisely

After being out in the elements and getting good and sweaty, your scalp needs extra love and attention. Consider reaching for a clarifying shampoo to break down the excess product and dirt you may be dealing with. Use a cleansing oil shampoo if your hair is parched and depleted of moisture.

Pre-Poo
Now is the time to pre-poo. Whip up a pre-shampoo oil treatment to replenish the moisture your hair needs. I love olive oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil. Combine your oils in a shallow bowl or glass, and let that bowl or glass sit in a sink of warm water. You don’t need a boiling hot oil treatment, but comfortably warm oil helps and feels wonderful.

Go Deep

A deep conditioning treatment is so very necessary after a weekend of summer fun. Make sure you read the instructions on your conditioner—many of us just slather on a product without acknowledging the best tips for application or length of time for optimal use. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to add a capful of your favorite oil to your conditioner.

Get Steamy
A steam treatment will really help you get back to where your hair wants to be. Consider investing in a hand-held or hooded hair steamer—they aren’t cheap, but an infusion of steam every two weeks or so will make a noticeable difference in the strength and luster of your hair.

Finger Detangle

f yoIf you’ve been out on the town and didn’t bring your wide tooth comb with you, don’t dread the detangling process. Just make time for it and be gentle with yourself. It’s best to saturate your hair with conditioner and begin by sectioning your hair off for easy detangling.
