Your ends are the oldest part of your hair, so they’re already extremely fragile, brittle and often hard to manage. We asked Kien Hoang, Oribe Educator and owner of Umbrella Salon in San Jose, and Ronnie Stam, Creative Director for Oribe Hair Care to lend a hand and offer suggestions on better maintenance. Take a look.
ESSENCE.com: What are a few ways women can protect their ends from breaking?
Kien Hoang: 1. Keep your ends moisturized! Since natural hair tends to be textured and curly, it needs a lot of moisture. I suggest shampooing just at the roots with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioning with intense conditioner for moisture and control. 2. Make sure you use a masque three times a month. Add a few drops of a nourishing hair oil to your masque for added moisture. 3. Always use a heat protectant before heat styling. 4. Get regular trims to keep hair healthy.

ESSENCE.com: How fragile are the ends of hair? Especially natural hair?
Kien Hoang: Hair that is naturally curly tends to lack moisture so it’s very fragile, which is why it’s important to use heat protectants when heat styling!
ESSENCE.com: What are some ways to avoid tangles and knots?
Kien Hoang: One way to avoid tangles and knots is to condition in a downward motion when you’re in the shower. I also suggest investing in a great wide-toothed comb to gently tease out any knots.
ESSENCE.com: On average, how much conditioner should women apply to their hair?
Ronnie Stam: The amount of conditioner you use depends on your hair length and type. My best tip for using the right amount is to condition your hair section by section. It takes more time, but you know you’re using the right amount and it actually saves you from using too much conditioner. Also be sure to use a masque at least once a week and leave it in for at least half an hour.
