Actress and singer Janelle Monáe revealed that she happens to be “cousins on cousins on cousins” with actress-producer Marsai Martin!
Both women recently found out they were related at a Golden Globes afterparty, according to their retelling in the September issue of InStyle Magazine.
“I admire so many things about Janelle. My family members would always tell me how we were related, so I was excited when we got to meet and say hello in person,” said Martin, adding that she was with her mother at the award show afterparty, when they met Monáe.
The “I Like That” singer recalled the moment vividly: “You were with your mom, and she was naming members of my family, and I was like ‘Oh my goodness!’ I don’t meet many people who know about my small community in Kansas City, Kan. It was the best news because I’m such a fan of you and your role on Black-ish.”
