If you’re looking through social media for fall hair inspiration, you’ve probably noticed one particular style folks are “flipping” out over. The 1960s flip is on its way to making a strong comeback, showing up on celebrities and influencers alike. Back in 2017, we saw Zendaya rock the style at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Show, and it was cute nod to the retro look. Now, it’s likely to pop up in your feed every other day.

While some ladies might have taken their flip inspiration from Mary Tyler Moore and Jackie Kennedy back in the ’60s, it was singers like Aretha Franklin and Mary Wells who made it a lewk in the Black community.

Back then it was extra large on top and took a ton of rollers and even more hair spray. Today, it’s a style that can be achieved in minutes with the sophisticated hair tools and styling products that we are blessed with. And ladies are wearing the style in a variety of ways, including high ponytails and with their natural coily texture, giving it a modern upgrade.
