New York Fashion Week is back and our eyes are to the streets. Just as eagerly as we anticipate the new styles ushered in by the runways, we are paying attention to how fashion week-goers are styling their clothes, now, as they witness the new and next.
The first day opened up with large fashion house Michael Kors setting the tone, and featured existential storytelling from Collina Strada, a sultry futuristic Grace Ling, and vibrant color stories from Black-owned brands Le’Enchanteur and Theophilio. Out and about, we came across many Black fashion figures in what we can only sum up as transitional wear. If day one showed us anything, it is that New York is simultaneously clinging to the tailends of summer as they get a head start on fall. In other words, people are mixing together Pleats Please cut off tops, billowy pant suits, layered dresses, and hot pants.
The healthy mix of summer and fall styles across the board provided ample style inspiration for any occasion. Different takes on bottoms shone through, with asymmetric, textured, or layered-fabric skirts making appearances in all varieties, oversized leather cargos, mini skirts, and a fair degree of denim.
We spotted the image architect himself, Law Roach, in a soft, dusty purple high-collared jumpsuit paired with a bright pink Louis Vuitton bag, keeping it effortlessly chic. Vogue Fashion Market Director Naomi Elizée was seen in a visually-intriguing, long-sleeved, pattern-blocked dress that felt perfect for early fall. Then, there was also The Cut’s EIC Lindsey Peoples looking golden in Diotima’s Darliston skirt, the iconic Lauryn Hill making her way to L’Enchanteur donned in gold accessories, and stylist Solange Franklin pictured with Jalil Johnson ahead of the Theophilio show, sporting bright island-approved colors.
