My Selfie Journey: Monique Hurd

Monique’s Journey

My hair is…natural.

I started my hair journey…in August 2010 where I transitioned for 10 months. Contrary to most, I had what would be viewed as healthy relaxed hair. My reason for this “transition” to becoming natural was out of mere curiosity. After inspiration from my roommate, and the fabulous naturalistas on YouTube, I began this journey to a physical change which also became a mental change as well.

Monique’s Journey

My current hair regimen consists of...

  • - A shampoo twice a month with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and Shea Moisture Moisture Retention.
  • - A co-wash between shampoos with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner.
  • - A protein treatment once a month with Tropical Isle JBCO Protein Conditioner/Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor.
  • - A daily moisturizer.

My favorite hair products include…

  • 1. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
  • 2. Oils (JBCO, Coconut Oil, Almond Oil)
  • 3. Tropical Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil Protein Conditioner.

Monique’s Journey

The secret to having healthy hair is…making sure your hair is moisturized at all times and dusting/trimming your ends when needed.

My biggest hair challenge is…finding styles that avoid pulling my thin edges. Unfortunately, my edges have been thin since I was a little girl. I am not sure if it was from tight barrettes or from the perm. However, I apply JBCO to the area and avoid tight hairstyles. I think I do a great job of camouflaging it!

Monique’s Journey

I love my hair because… it is versatile and made me realize the beauty within myself. I’m more confident with my natural hair in its kinky state vs. straight.

My hair crush is…Laila-Jean (IG: @NeffyFroFro).
