The Lucky Lady: Wendy Ferguson, 28, Attorney
Her Leading Man: Brando Starkey, 30, Law Professor
The Big Day: May 17, 2013
Where and how did you meet your man?
As a newly admitted law student at Brooklyn Law School, I was seeking advice to calm my nerves. A friend put me in touch with Brando, who was about to start his third year at Harvard Law. We talked so much throughout the summer that we decided to meet before the school year started. We’ve been together ever since.
What was your first impression of him?
I thought he was very funny.
What was his first impression of you?
He said I was his ‘dream girl’!
Who said “I love you” first?
Brando first professed his love for me, and it was right at the tip of my tongue to reciprocate.
How did he pop the question?
Brando had finished his first year as a law professor and he was in the midst of packing up his office. I offered to come in one afternoon to help him out, plus I wanted to take some pictures of him in his classroom. I arrived at his office in a not-so-flattering outfit, flip-flops and no makeup. As we walked into his classroom, I made a beeline to the back of the room while he walked to the podium up front. I turned around, camera in hand, to take the pictures and my jaw dropped. There on this HUGE projector screen was this massive picture of me. I stood there in shock as Brando started a slide show during in which he told me all the reasons he wanted to marry me. It was amazing!
What was really going through your mind as he proposed?
I didn’t think he could surprise me, so I was thinking, Oh my gosh, he really pulled this off, and I can’t believe I’m not wearing any makeup for this moment.
