By the time Jennifer Hudson auditioned for “American Idol” in 2003 she had already lost 60 pounds, going from a size 22 to size 10. A former Disney cruise ship singer, she did it by cutting out all fried foods and jogging.

At the Idol Top 12 Finalists party in 2004 Jennifer beamed like a winner. By then she hadn’t had ice cream in four years because of her weight loss goals. Fast forward to 2010 and it’s now been 10 years since she’d had the tasty treat.

Surprisingly, Hudson had to regain 20 of the 60 pounds she’d previously lost in order to play “Effie” in “Dreamgirls.” This time the Chi-town native knew those cookies and cake would pay off.

As soon as she wrapped filming “Dreamgirls” Hudson went back to eating healthy and exercising. "“It bothered me to not workout,” she said. Here she attends the Oscar nominees luncheon in 2007.

At a post-Oscar bash, instead of toasting with alcohol, Hudson is said to have sipped mineral water in preparation for her morning workout. "I never would have guessed I’d be up at 4 a.m. to run,” she said. “I love it!”

At eight months pregnant Hudson performed at Michael Jackson’s memorial service, showing off her pregnancy in a flowing maternity dress.

Hudson gained 35 pounds during what she describes as a smooth pregnancy—free of morning sickness and cravings.

Just one month after giving birth to son David Otunga, Jr. via C-section, Hudson was back at work singing at a taping of VH1 Divas. “I’m gradually getting back to work,” she told PEOPLE. “I’ll do something and come right back home. Eventually I’ll have a traveling nanny.”

Four months after David, Jr’s birth and Hudson looked fresher than ever by going back to a diet of no sugar, no red meat and only brown carbs. “If I could go around eating like I ate while I was pregnant, that would be the way to go,” she said. "But you have to snap back to it. It’s like an on-and-off switch, you have to go back to the norm.”

J-Hud returned home to Chicago for her first TV special “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” feeling and looking great. “I work out at least 45 minutes every day. I have 8 lbs. to go. But I don’t count calories. I make sure I feed myself,” she told PEOPLE.

2010 started off on a high note for J-Hud and her career was back on track. She also enlisted celeb trainer Hayley Pasternak to help her along her weight loss journey. Pasternak’s other clients include Alicia Keys and Halle Berry.

Fresh off announcing her new role as spokesperson of Weight Watchers and preparing to play Winnie Mandela in a biopic, J-Hud arrives for a taping of “Good Morning America.” Before, her weight loss goal was to lose 8lbs, and now it’s “to bounce quarters off her butt,” her trainer told PEOPLE.
