In October of 1984, Janet released her second studio album, Dream Street, and later made the courageous decision to leave her then-husband less than a year later in January of 1985. She graced the cover of ESSENCE to share her personal story.

In 2010, Janet reignited her acting flame, playing opposite an all-star cast in Tyler Perry's critically-acclaimed For Colored Girls and reprising her starring role in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too, while also headlining the 2010 ESSENCE Festival in July. She graced the cover of ESSENCE in August of that year.
