“I feel so secure in who I am, and I’ve waited so long for that feeling, and it’s so divine,” says Davis, on her decision to rock natural hair on the red carpet. “I feel that there has definitely been a shift in my career, but what comes with it is a great sense of responsibility, and that can be daunting. I want to help make a difference in this industry and to hopefully help shape how Black women are cast on film.”

“ESSENCE has always been the epitome of excellence and beauty for African-American women. There haven’t been that many outlets that celebrate us. To celebrate alongside these beautiful women is an honor today. I purposely didn’t prepare anything to say, so I can just speak from my heart.”

“From the moment I was born, my mom was an ESSENCE subscriber,” said the honoree. “Every month we’d get this magazine with a beautiful brown girl on the cover in the mail, and we would think anything is possible. Now I’m on the cover.”

“Bringing up the next generation of writers is the next important thing. One day they’ll be giving me a job. I don’t have any tissues, and I hear this is a real tearjerker, so I’m worried now. I feel like I don’t know what to expect, so I’ll see what happens and enjoy.”
