In addition to being a Grammy Award-winning singer, executive producer, husband and proud father, John Legend is someone who has continuously used his platform to bring awareness to pressing social issues negatively targeting people of color.

While he’s been most passionate about doing what he can to help spread awareness about the necessity of ending mass incarceration, the 2017 ESSENCE Festival performer also been vocal about several other issues including women’s rights, police brutality and education. Most recently, John premiered the visual for his latest single, “Surefire,” which tells the story of a Mexican man and a Muslim woman who defy the racial prejudice around them to fight for their love. The song is the latest single from John’s new album, Darkness and Light.
