Welcome to 95 Live, where once a week we’ll revisit a day in music history from — you guessed it — 1995, the year the Essence Festival premiered.
On March 21, 1995, TLC’s “Red Light Special”, written by the decade’s favorite songwriter, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, was #2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It tried hard, but couldn’t break into the number one slot, thanks to a little ditty you might know by heart called “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Williams.
In the video, the trio play cards in a brothel full of gorgeous, shirtless men. (And yes, that’s a young Boris Kodjoe you see hanging off of T-Boz’s shoulder.) It’s a steamy but funny vingette, with Left Eye playing the house pimp and T-Boz and Chilli posing as regular visitors.
What you might not know is that there are three versions of the video: sexy, sexier and sexiest. But don’t worry, the video below is totally safe for work.
