Beyoncé Drops Surprise Project 'Homecoming: The Live Album'

By Joi-Marie McKenzie · April 17, 2019April 17, 2019
It includes a remake of the 1981 classic, "Before I Let Go," by Frankie Beverly and Maze.

We’re not worthy. We’re just not worthy. As if a new Netflix documentary wasn’t enough—where fans finally get to see just how the Blackest Coachella performance came to be—Beyoncé released a surprise album titled Homecoming: The Live Album.

The album includes Bey’s remake of the 1981 classic and a must-play at any Black cookout and HBCU football games, “Before I Let Go” by Frankie Beverly and Maze.

The surprise album boasts a whopping 40 of Beyoncé’s biggest hits, which is nearly two hours of bops.

It also perfectly complements, Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé, which followed the singer over the course of eight months in preparation for her 2018 performance in the desert. It included four months of rehearsal with 150 musicians and dancers all selected by Beyoncé herself.

It’s also an homage to Black women thought leaders—all of whom graduated from HBCUS—including Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Marian Wright Edelman. Beyoncé also recognized authors Audre Lorde, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and W.E.B. Du Bois.

And in case you’re wondering, Beyoncé fell in love with the culture of HBCUs thanks to her father, Mathew Knowles, who’s an alumnus of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
