Last week, I attended a perfume launch party for my fab friend Tasheka Myers at Gild Hall. Her new perfume is called Clear by Tasheka and I’m in love with the scent! I am so very proud of her because she went after her dream of having her own perfume line, although she had worked for years as an attorney. It is a lesson to us all to always follow your dreams and to achieve the goals you set for yourself. Can’t wait to see Clear by Tasheka in stores!

For this look I paired together shades of blue and subtle mixes of prints — polka dot sunglasses, stripped sweater, floral platforms. I like the preppy feel of the jacket and crisp shorts. The boy in the collage reminds me of a young Jay-Z! How ironic that I’m wearing head-to-toe blue. This one’s for you, Baby Blue.

I love to sass up my casual looks with fun accessories. Today, I chose my “Pow” pin by Jeantrix. The color is fab and what a fun statement! We all need some POW in our lives! I met the designers of Jeantrix- Homm & Nyce- last year while I was styling a shoot in NYC. They are such a creative bunch and I really relate to their colorful and innovative aesthetic. Brooches are one of the most transformative accessories! I put them everywhere- on the backs of jackets, in my turbans. No limits. Fab ones, I encourage you all to add some POW in your life today, however that may be!

Last week, I attended Tracy Reese’s Plenty Presentation. There were lots of pretty dresses and fab separates. I especially loved the floral sequin bra top combo and an amazing turquoise leather jacket! I am a big fan of Tracy’s use of color and print. So girly and fun. I accessorized my look with a beaded Jewel by Lisa clutch, Matisse snakeskin boots and an Ankara turban. All in all, a fab night of fashion!

I find vintage fascinating. It’s my most favorite thing to wear. There’s nothing like owning something that has been around longer than you. My mother gave me these clothes. I am so grateful that she saved so many things from the 70s and 80s. I was at her house last weekend and came back with a bag of vintage goodies. So much fun! Thanks mom, love you.

Last night I attended the Obakki presentation, which was a great start to my pre- New York Fashion Week season. I am here with designer Treana Peake, who is wearing one of her fabulous draped frocks. Her Fall 2012 collection featured effortlessly cool and sophisticated dresses and separates in neutrals and rich jewel tones. There was a mix of Sudanese models, as the theme of the collection centered on that nation. What a great pairing. I am a fan!

Last night, my friend Enyinne Owunwanne and I attended the grand opening soiree for Cut25, a contemporary brand by designer Yigal Azrouel. Enyinne is the founder and creative director of Heritage1960, an online shop for global African fashion and lifestyle brands. Enyinne, like myself is Nigerian-American and super stylish. I am living for her vintage leopard print coat. After a week of pants and leggings, I decided to go girly with this adorable vintage dress. Be sure to check out Enyinne’s fabulous site heritage1960.com and also visit Cut25, which opens its doors in Soho today!

This look reminds me of a classic, old school poet. Simplistic and effortlessly cool. Monotone looks are so chic. I especially loved last week’s sorbet hued outfit. Today, I’ve mixed in jolts of leopard for a personal touch. Classic grey and leopard accents. Whats not to love?

This outfit screams fun/casual. I wore it to Williamsburg to get my nails done by my friend celeb nail artist Naomi Yasuda. This vintage jumpsuit is super cozy and I added the blazer for subtle polish. The jumpsuit is cropped so the legwarmers act to elongate. Gotta keep it creative. Check out all of my nail designs by Naomi on my blog, joylovesfashion.com!

It was a gorgeous sunny (but chilly) day and I could not get this vintage shirt out of my mind. It was the only thing I wanted to wear. Vibrant colors make me happy. This shirt is so relaxed and chic, crisp and polished, but still very downtown cool. Turbans are my most beloved accessory. They are simplistic yet so fashion forward. I am planning a turban tutorial for my YouTube fashion channel. It will be a treat for sure!

I wore this outfit for a Stylecaster.com story I was featured in. These Versace for H&M leggings have been in heavy rotation in my wardrobe. They go with most looks and are more fabulous than plain black. This is a perfect day to night outfit. The white dinner jacket and faux fur stole mixed with a green tunic adds a great pop of color. So chic!

Floral open toe platforms for winter? Yes, please!..with a side of charcoal grey tights. Layering open toe heels is such a chic look. Talk about fashion and function. This is my fashionista secretary look. Pleated skirt for polish, while the turtleneck pulls it all together. Slip on my vintage Jordache faux fur and we’re good to go. Stepping out in style.

Pastels are a huge color this upcoming Spring season and I think its no coincidence since it goes so perfectly with the beautiful weather. I am all for pretty pastels and sorbet hues. They make for a great “girly-girl” look. I like to stick to one color, in today’s case: pale pink, and build the whole look around it. So gorgeous.

I truly believe prints were made to be mixed. It brings out their individual beauty and detail. Rest assured, there is no right or wrong way to mix. It all depends on what makes you feel good. I always say there are absolutely no rules in fashion, just helpful tips. We make our own rules. (I even made a YouTube video on this topic.) When pairing dominating prints, sometimes you want to find a balance. This can be accomplished by adding a neutral or solid piece to the outfit, like this chocolate brown leather skirt and boots. My three favorite accessories of this look are my 1970s vintage African headwrap, tied into a turban (given to me by my mother), my beautiful gold necklace, made in India (a gift from the great fashion stylist Freddie Leiba, he’s the best!) and my burnt orange faux fur stole (recent purchase!) This is one of my favorite looks!!

Everyone knows how much I adore the color grey. It is my ultimate neutral and I like how well it contrasts with bright tones, like my skirt. It is the easiest color to coordinate since it goes with everything! This is my favorite sweater. I like its simplicity and classic print. My boyfriend’s mom gave me this super cozy scarf for Christmas and I literally wear it everyday. Thanks, Mrs. Okere!

Colorful fur stoles are great for accessorizing. I recently added this beautiful pink one to my collection. You can wear them as scarves or pinned to a jacket, like I have here. Aside from the stole, my favorite pieces of this outfit are the hot pink leather gloves, cow print turban, cat eye frames and most of all, my beautiful necklace made in India- a gift from fashion stylist Freddie Leiba! This look works for both day and night. And I love that it screams “Joy Adaeze”!

Yes, you can work brights, even in winter. A great way to make them work during the cold season is to contrast with black or grey. The end result is anything but cold and dreary. For accessories, I am wearing two panther brooches on each lapel of my blazer. Such a fun look. You can also add brooches to the sleeves of your blazer to mimic a cuff link. They are what I call the limitless accessory!

Sparkly jacket? Check. Equally as sparkly top? Check. The results were fabulous! This outfit shows the beauty and importance of mixing vintage and modern pieces. The key is fresh, not dated. And forget the fashion rules you thought you knew. Sometimes more is more. Wear the sparkles, but nix any excess jewelry. The end result? Pure wow factor.

The classic denim jacket. This is one staple that will never go out of style. There are no limits on how you can wear a jean jacket so be creative! I paired mine with a voluminous floral skirt. I love the result of the light blue denim wash and bold burgundy/ivory pattern on the skirt. A great casual chic look for less!

White and silver make a gorgeous combo, especially in the winter. This silver dress is covered with tiny pleats which accentuates its beautiful iridescent color. I paired it with a sheer white button down cinched at the waist for structure. The animal print shoes are a fun accent to the overall look!

My love for all things black and gold continues with today’s chic ensemble, straight from the streets of Harlem. This vintage jacket is made of silk, so luxurious! My grandmother (who was Nigerian) gave me these amazing African bracelets when I was 10 years old. I am sure I will have them forever- they are one of my favorite memories of her. I love the dynamic feel that this burnt orange clutch gives to the entire look. I am a firm believer in the power of accent colors. They make any outfit more exciting, who wouldn’t want that?

This look is a bit retro with a twist. I’m wearing a turban made of African fabric which is one of my favorite trademarks. I love that it is so unexpected. In my opinion denim on denim is always a go. The key is mixing washes, which gives the outfit more dimension. Tribal bangles and fierce heels complete my fun retro look.

The weather has been crazy cold this whole week in NYC, so it was time to ditch my leopard car coat for my faux fur Vintage. This is one of my fav pieces! It has personality and goes with everything, especially my leopard gloves. Can you tell I love animal prints?!

I wore this outfit to a New Years party thrown by NFL Giants’ Aaron Ross and his wife Sanya Richards-Ross. I love the look of black and gold. It’s so chic and polished. I added a fun mix to the black and gold theme with silver shoes! Mixing metals are a fun trend for jewelry and it works just as well with clothes. Currently, I have a mixed metal nail design by celeb nail artist Naomi Yasuda. Also, red lipstick is so great for adding an extra pop of color! I am wearing Russian Red.

Starting off a new year is an exciting time. A time to reflect on 2011 and create goals for 2012. I wore this outfit on New Years Day to church with my family. I love how the scarf and belt add a fun pop of color. Since the skirt is voluminous, I opted for a fitted sweater. Balance is key – it can totally make or break your look. My rule of thumb: if voluminous on bottom-wear fitted on top and vice versa. If voluminous all over- belt it! Cheers to you in 2012!

This is from Zac Posen’s holiday party at the Mondrian Hotel in Soho. It was fabulous and I had the honor of meeting Zac, who I have admired for some time. I love his creativity and point of view. Zac looked stylish in his black turtleneck, suede jacket and pants. Tres chic! Turtlenecks and jackets always look amazing on men- and women! So 60s. I am wearing my colorblock blazer, a vibrant shirt and leopard turban. The turban in this look adds an unexpected twist. I feel it is always good to have an element of surprise in your outfit. Don’t hold back! Wishing everyone an amazing new year! See you in 2012!

Lace is such a beautiful fabric. It wasn’t until I was getting dressed this morning that I had the brilliant idea to layer two lace tops! The results? Magical. Almost Angelic. This is such a fun retro, casual look! The hat is the star of the outfit, followed by the sleeveless tunic. Wide brim hats have been a huge hit this season and they totally set the tone for a fab look! Any color works. Wear your hair down or with a scarf, like I have here. I swear I am addicted to hats. My collection is always growing!

Turtlenecks are essential during fall and winter. After misplacing my fav black vintage style, I was on the prowl for another. My search ended at Ann Tayor, where they had a fabulous 50% off sale. I liked the turtlenecks so much that I bought it in 3 colors! Gotta keep it cozy and cute.

Today the weather was gorgeous enough for me to wear my Vintage army jacket. I am told this jacket dates as far back as the Vietnam War. Pretty amazing. If there is anyone I wouldn’t mind sharing my style spotlight with, its super fabulous designer- Jeremy Scott! Jeremy and I met at the launch of fashion shopping site, very.com. I am a huge fan and I never miss his show- his runway walk is too fierce! Here, I am wearing my favorite blazer with a print blouse and high waist skinny jeans. I love Jeremy’s colorful striped sweater (from his line), metallic pants and fun necklace. He definitely knows how to have fun with fashion and let his personality shine through. Sometimes when you only have 5 minutes to get ready the right pieces make all the difference. I moved into my new Harlem apartment yesterday (yay!!) and haven’t had time to unpack. The result? Literally digging into suitcases and boxes for an outfit! Whew. But it’s hard to go wrong when incorporating color and pattern. Here’s to a great week ahead. Happy Monday!

TGIF! Just because your rockin’ a casual look doesn’t mean you have to look sloppy! When dressing down, some great tips to remember are: fit, accessories and color. Be sure to wear jeans that flatter. Accessories-like my African necklace and watch give the outfit character. My orange bag adds wow factor with its fun, unexpected color-especially for Fall. When you incorporate these three things, the end result is a casual style done right. Because Fashionistas never take a day off.

Today’s outfit embodies two of my favorite things: turbans and mixed prints! I’ve mixed a striped turban, floral top, leopard loafers and tribal print bracelet — how can you not love it?. Turbans are my go-to whenever I want to kick my outfit up a notch. Mixed prints have the ability to add depth and texture to any look. Fab tip: if you’re mixing for the first time, stay within the same color family. Keep working at it and soon you’ll be a mixed print connoisseur! Happy mixin’!

Today I am sharing my style spotlight with R&B star Robin Thicke, who came by the ESSENCE office to promote his new CD “Love After War.” (He also invited me to his show afterwards! Fab.) In this look, I am giving you a taste of Parisian casual chic with an H&M beret and cozy sweater cinched with a vintage leather belt. Robin was a fan! Here, he showcases his rock star edge in a fabulous leather lapel jacket (love!), crisp white tee, dark wash jeans complete with layered necklaces and super cool shades. Fellas take note! This is how you dress to impress the ladies. Women love a man with style.

Menswear has always been a great fascination on mine. The tailored look of a jacket, a pair of sleek cuff links, a crisp white shirt under an Italian suit; I love the small details. Women in menswear can be just as sexy as wearing a body con dress. The look exudes confidence and swag. I love menswear because, when done right, it represents taking pride in your style and owning it. For this look I was inspired by Michael Jackson in “Smooth Criminal” and Janelle Monae, if she were having a color moment. Tres chic.

Hats are one of the most transformative accessories. They have the ability to change the course of a whole outfit. Since I am a style chameleon, I have always been drawn to hats and I call upon them regularly! I feel it’s important to have many different styles to go with a plethora of outfits. The classic fedora, beret, turban, bowler and newsboy are some of my favs. I especially love wearing mens hats since they tend to have more attitude. Today I am wearing a vintage topper I’ve had for ages. Such a fab look!

I have a love affair with blazers. Fitted, oversized, vintage, mens — I love them all! Over the years I have accumulated many variations. This black and white blazer is one of my favs. I love the structure and color blocking. My favorite part of this outfit is also the smallest detail: my panther brooch, which I pinned on my shoulder. Blazers and brooches are always a winning combo! How do you like to rock your brooches?

Nothing counteracts gloomy weather like sleek style! This H&M pencil skirt and shirt did the trick. Since I am not an “all black everything” kind of girl, I added this gorgeous Ellen Tracy fur collared sleeveless jacket to add a touch of color. Next up- my favorite watch by Jeremy Scott, a vintage gold necklace and TopShop patent pumps. Feels like it’s going to be a great day!

Animal prints are a fabulous way to wake up an outfit, plus they go with everything! This Old Navy leopard car coat has been my staple for Fall. Today I paired it with H&M skinny jeans, YSL booties, and to add a bit of color; a Versace for H&M alligator print scarf. Ladies, time to give black and brown a break — substitute with animal prints to fab up your look!
