'Nightlife' Queen Jody Watley's Top 10 NYE Picks

If there's anyone who can show you how to get glam for a New Year's Eve Party, it's this feather and sequins donning beauty.

By Celia L. Smith · December 24, 2013October 27, 2020
01
Legendary Style

“Play up your attributes,” is Jody Watley’s key piece of fashion advice. “Every woman should have a signature. Something that’s classic, that says ‘you,’ but at the same time don’t be stuck, experiment.”

Albert Sanchez
02
Well Suited

“A good jumpsuit is a classic piece. In fact, I’m wearing one in the video for Nightlife –– it’s DVF. Jumpsuits are great too because they’re good for any body type. You can be tiny or you can be curvy and you can make it work,” shares Jody Watley.

Crepe wrap jumpsuit, Diane von Furstenberg, $199, matches.com.

03
In A Clutch

“Clutch bags are my favorite. Currently I have a tiny McQueen with embellished knuckles so it could be used if something goes down –– it serves dual purpose,” laughs the singer.

Snakeskin skull knuckle box clutch, Alexander McQueen, $1,600, ssense.com.

04
Slim Cut

“I like J Brand because if you have a little bit of curve they tend to fit. It’s a great staple. A cute top and a great pair of pumps, you can’t go wrong.”

Coated skinny jeans, J Brand, $230, netaporter.com.

05
Draped & Dreamy

“For tops, Helmut Lang is one of my favorite’s –– drapey, very sexy. The cut of things is very important.”

Draped sateen top, Helmut Lang, $117, netaporter.com.

06
Motor Mama

“I still think a black leather biker jacket is very chic because you can put it over a gown or with flats or a dress, and make it your own, and that’s something from my solo debut and throughout that has been a signature of mine.”

Classic motorcycle jacket, Leather King, $199, wilsonsleather.com.

07
Cute Cocktail Dress

“A great vintage cocktail dress is always a good look!”

Vintage sequin cocktail dress, Oleg Cassini, $507, farfetch.com.

08
Ruffled Feathers

“Maribou feathers –– vintage, is the ultimate in glamour. I love a feather bolero, it’s just chic, it’s classic, it’s a statement. When you walk into a room people are like, ‘who is she?’ Feathers and sequins, that’s the nightlife.”

Marabou feather bolero, BCBGMAXAZRIA, $278, bcbg.com.

09
Going Through Hoops

“I’m a classic girl, give me some jumbo hoop earrings,” says Watley when it comes to accessories. “I have some too that are rhinestone, which add a nice evening sparkle.”

Rhinestone hoop earrings, G by Guess, $12, amazon.com.

10
Cuffed Up

Watley’s must-have accessory: “A signature bracelet like a rhinestone cuff. It’s all about the sparkle.”

“Kempner” shield cuff, Fenton, $550, fentonusa.com.

11
Boots Made For Walking

“A great pair of heels, of course, it can be ankle boots which is a signature of mine and still very chic and popular,” says Watley. “I’m more of a pointy girl, the pointy toe to me is a little more classic –– even with funky and trendy things I’m always looking for that classic edge.”

Neoprene ankle boot, Zara, $60, zara.com.
