Based on what we’ve seen backstage at New York Fashion Week, nail art is evolving in a major way. While perusing two of this season’s buzziest shows, I noticed that artists are expanding their canvas beyond the nail.

For Rodarte’s SS 2017 show, nail artist Tracylee transformed lacquer into jewelry by applying a Morgan Taylor gold glitter polish by for a chain-like detail around the nail bed and on the skin.

And at Chromat, Eda Midori of Lady Fancy Nails used a black Floss Gloss shade to create strips off of the nail bed. Her translation of the brand’s “Hyperwave” athletic theme was a play on the black grease that football players wear under eye.

“I really wanted to push the different interpretations of what nail art can be and how it’s understood,” said Midori.

Tracylee’s tip for wearing polish off of the nail is to remove the surface oils on the skin with rubbing alcohol prior to applying polish. You’ll also get a longer wear out of a glitter polish.
