ESSENCE kicked off New York Fashion Week with a bang.
Last night, we hosted our inaugural Best In Black Fashion Awards in New York City and the house was jam-packed. As our host Bevy Smith caressed the crowd with her playful humor and Jidenna himself performed hits from his latest album, the guests relished in the unprecedented celebration of Black creatives.
ESSENCE established our Best In Black Fashion Awards to combat the lack of recognition that creators color receive in the fashion space. While a host of popular trends remain rooted in Black culture, we rarely get the credit for birthing them.
The CFDA and Vogue Fashion Fund have received criticism for repeatedly snubbing deserving designers of color.

To create a rightful space where Black stylists, models, photographers, designers and more can be recognized for their trendsetting work, the BIBFAs was created. We honored fashion mavens such as Rihanna and Zendaya and top designers from Fe Noel to Christopher John Rogers.
