While we can always expect the timeless nautical trend to make an appearance during spring, this season the sailing theme is taking off as one of the strongest looks to adopt. One of the first items you want to get your hands on, if your thinking of introducing this trend into your spring wardrobe is the ultra-versatile striped top. We can’t turn our heads lately without spotting a striped top on the street or on our favorite celebs. The Wall Street Journal even ran a piece about the current high demand in retail shops for the French sailor (also known as Brenton) navy blue and white stripe crewnecks. The iconic French naval uniform top was made fashionable by the likes of Coco Chanel, Picasso and Andy Warhol. From Chanel, Marc Jacobs to H&M’s spring campaign, the nautical influence has been reinvented with stripes popping up on dresses, skirts and shorts. Nautical motifs like white piping and sailor buttons are also gracing mini-skirts and pants. Inject nautical touches into your existing wardrobe with caution for smooth sailing. Refrain from going overboard on stripes by limiting them to one piece of clothing and avoid anything that’s too literal like a goofy sailor hat. Turn to great accent colors like white, creams, navy, red and gold and accessories like rope belts, striped platforms, oversize men gold watches and the always cool aviators (which is also part of the aviation uniform) to finish off your urban maritime ensemble.Now, if only we had a yacht...
