Where Are They Now? The Cast of 'Girlfriends'

Spoiler alert: Everyone’s doing really, really well.

When Girlfriends landed on small screens in 2000, Black women everywhere tuned in to choose which of the four main characters was most relatable to their lives. Pulled from the expansive mind of Mara Brock Akil, during its eight year run, Girlfriends went on to become a pillar of excellence in the community of Black women and served as proof that we are truly magic.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Career-driven, caring, and about her business, Tracee Ellis Ross’ portrayal of Joan Clayton on Girlfriends was a reminder that Black women can and will be everything they dreamed of. While the show wasn’t the start to her impressive resume, it was the one that set the standard for her future in acting. Since the show’s ending in 2008, Ross has held roles in many shows including CSI, Private Practice, and Read Between the Lines. As of 2014, the award-winning actress has starred in the hit-show Black-ish alongside Anthony Anderson and Yara Shahidi

Golden Brooks

Since ending her eight season run as the neck-rolling, sassy, rant-filled Maya Wilkes on Girlfriends, Golden Brooks has been quite busy. After acting in independent films and making appearances in shows such as The Exes and Hart of Dixie, Brooks joined the cast of TV One’s Hollywood Divas in 2014 and had a recurring role in the Starz show Blunt Talk. The actress also had a daughter with actor D.B. Woodside in 2009 and is set to star alongside Amandla Stenberg in 2018’s The Darkest Minds.

Jill Marie Jones

Known as the loud, selfish and bougie girlfriend of the group, Toni Childs — played by Jill Marie Jones — became the friend that everyone loved to hate due to her stuck up attitude. Ending her time on the show after six seasons, Jones went on to act in movies such as The Perfect Holiday alongside Queen Latifah, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union and the Black-ensemble cast film, 35 & Ticking. Additionally, she has had roles in shows like Sleepy Hollow, American Horror Story, and Ash vs Evil Dead.

Persia White

Playing the role of the free-spirited and bohemian chic Lynn Searcy, Persia White took on a role that will be forever remembered in Black culture. Since ending her stint on the iconic show Girlfriends, White digitally released her debut album Mecca, has appeared in The Vampire Diaries, and married fellow actor Joseph Morgan in 2014.

Reggie Hayes

After his role as the dry humored, mama’s boy William Dent (don’t forget the Esquire), Reggie Hayes — much like his on-screen gal pals — has continued to appear in many acting roles over the years. To date, Hayes has appeared in roles on shows for Criminal Minds, Let’s Stay Together, Hart of Dixie, NCIS, and more.

Keesha Sharp

Landing the role of Monica Brooks on the show in 2002, Keesha Sharp moved from outcast to a member of the crew while playing William’s wife. Since Girlfriends wrapped in 2008, Sharp has acted in many films including Why Did I Get Married? and shows — which she is most notably known for her role as Gigi in Are We There Yet? Since 2016, she has starred alongside Damon Wayans in the Fox series, Lethal Weapon.

Khalil Kain

Playing the role of Maya’s husband Darnell after Flex Alexander Season 1 departure, Khalil Kain grew to become a relatable and realistic depiction of Black men in society.  Since the Girlfriends season finale, Kain continued to act. He was seen in the 2010 film, For Colored Girls and is noted as having roles in shows like Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, and Elementary. In addition, he is credited for roles in the movies Misguided Behavior and The Fearless One.
