Maya Rudolph explores her family’s rich history in an upcoming episode of PBS’ Finding Your Roots.

With the help of Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Rudolph uncovers the strength of her third great-grandfather who was rightfully awarded land his after being granted his freedom by suing the son of his former slave master.

In Living Color: Multiracial Celebrities

Rudolph is the daughter of singer Minnie Ripperton and Jewish music producer/composer Richard Rudolph. Ripperton died in 1979 from cancer.

Finding Your Roots airs Tuesdays at 8pm on PBS.
