Will, we can't do this without you!
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remains one of the most beloved Black sitcoms of the ‘90s, and many have been begging for a reboot of the show in similar fashion to the Full House reboot.
Could you imagine seeing what the Banks household is up to now that Will, Carlton, Hilary and Ashley are all adults?
We might never know. Will Smith is reportedly one of the reasons this won’t become a reality any time soon.
Tatyana Ali (who played Ashley) recently spoke with US Weekly and said, “Some of us are [game]. I’m down. But it was a really special time for those six years. I’m not sure if Will necessarily wants to touch it.”
Although we were bummed to hear this revelation from Ali, her explanation definitely made sense.
“It might just need to stay that gem,” said Ali. “Honestly, knowing him, I think he might want to keep it as this just kind of precious moment. I don’t know how the characters would be now.”
We have various ideas of how the characters could evolve but we also see the roadblocks that exist. Could this bring up another feud with Janet Hubert, the original Vivian? Since James Avery (who played Uncle Phil) passed away in 2013, how would the show operate without him? And lastly, with Alfonso Ribeiro hosting America’s Funniest Home Videos and Will Smith working on the third and fourth installments of Bad Boys, would the two of them even have time for a reboot?
For now, we have that memorable reunion of the cast to keep hope alive.
[SOUND] During the summer it was reported that Will Smith's production company was shopping around a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot. Recently, Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton, expressed his opinion on the Possible re-boot. And I quote, it's not exciting to me because I know it ain't gonna happen. He continued, and if it happened, it wouldn't be Fresh Prince, it would be something that's taking the story of the show and having all new people do something. To me, that's not, Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Is Will Smith starring in it? No. Then it ain't no Fresh Prince of Bel Air. [LAUGH] So, what did we think? Is this slayed or shade? One, two, three! Slayed or, oh, this one says shade. Shade, slayed, shade. Okay Calise start us off. Why shade? Okay, so at first I was thinking I admire his loyalty. But then I was thinking about when I was a kid, Fresh Prince was a very good influence on my generation and I think right now we need that for young black men. To have somebody who has to make good decisions. He's having fun, but it's an uplifting show. And it also gives all these jobs to minorities that are in the entertainment industry. So he's being very shortsighted by saying let's not do another Fresh Prince. Okay, if you don't want another Fresh Prince, do a Fresh Princess. Boy Meets World did it. Okay, a little switch on it. They did [UNKNOWN] world. That's true. They do have that. Not shade. First of all, soon as you leave this set, you're gonna have to go trademark that, coin that, because somebody's gonna use that. [LAUGH] Can we send her the video for intellectual property so she can have that? You see that? All right, we're gonna work on that Maury. Maury, what did you have? You had a slayed? Why do you think its a slay? Oh you know because my hand just went straight up like that. No, I'm joking, no. I kinda get what he's saying, but then she just made a point that me revamp my brain a little bit, hold my hand through this. I'm not gonna hold your hand You showed me being indecisive I know that showed me being indecisive. Hold me. Okay. [LAUGH] It's that thing where I just figured out what you were saying, and it's absolutely true. Because we were just talking about uplifting about two seconds ago. Yes. We were. And that is necessary. Maybe it's a think of taking the idea of what that was, but maybe not trying to redo that, but. Use it as a blueprint. So I'm still with the slayed, so now I'm slashade like she was. I like the idea of the Fresh Princess. I do, I really, really do. And good job for calling out Boy Meets Girl. That is good. Just saying. [UNKNOWN] Worry about that, but of course the shade is He didn't have to go on and on about what it wasn't gonna be because the best had already been done. And I think I even read, too, and I appreciate him saying, like, the backbone on the show was James Avery who, you know, passed away, so how can they do the show without him? But also it's like Like dude, calm down. You can't do a reboot. You can recast it, you can come on as the neighbor. Like, there's a part for you, which is the tone. Add in the, I mean granted [UNKNOWN]- All this brings a little something, something- There's a little something like well, I can't be in it anymore, and go back to doing America's Funniest Home Videos. Look at this one, see. I'm just saying. Shade. Be happy you won Dancing With the Stars. Did he win? He did win and he's guest hosting right now. Yeah. So, be happy in that line. But yeah, so a new generation of actors can come along. [LAUGH] I'm here for that. I love all of this that y'all are giving me. What? Let's see what our Facebook fans had to say out there. Chantal Chantel Monique Hosea, yes all three names, said no shade at all. Why mess with something too perfect. It's like trying to repaint the Mona Lisa. It's a classic that can't be remade. Okay. Well thank you very much, Chantel, for chiming in. [MUSIC]
