“Style has been my voice long before I found the words to express myself,” Houston-based content creator Micah Pegues shared. She’s not one to shy away from a bold look, often seen on Instagram, accumulating over 33,000 followers, rocking a coveted outfit. The influencer gives her mother credit for her introduction to fashion. Her mother worked as an engineer by day and a fashion designer by night, running her label Diary of Joli and running her boutique, Head Over Heels. Pegues watched her mother curate seasonal trends, mentor young entrepreneurs and design throughout her childhood.
“I was her little shadow, sitting in the corner of her store playing dress-up, attending trade shows, and eventually becoming her muse. She designed my homecoming and prom dresses, as well as my dance uniforms, making every piece unique and special,” she reminisced. The content creator shared that her mother’s love for fashion wasn’t merely about material things but about confidence and storytelling. The influencer began learning the language of fashion her mother taught her.
Houston Rodeo’s Black Heritage Day is one of Pegues’s favorite events. The contributions from African American culture is tangible throughout the day with the history of Black cowboys being highlighted. She’s delighted by the community’s unity to uplift this rich heritage, dancing unabashedly. Fashion is always something to be ecstatic about too. “It’s like a giant style showcase,” she noted. Especially, during themed events, it gives her the opportunity to get creative and immerse herself in the rodeo experience.
Some of her most memorable looks include her “Old Western Chic” themed outfit consisting of a lace button-down shirt adorned with ruffle detailing. “Lace always reminds me of those classic Western films I used to watch with my grandparents,” she stated. In juxtaposed fashion, she paired her light-wash cheetah print barrel pants with her top to add a trendy and unexpected element to her look. Her shoes were, of course, a pair of leather cowboy boots, but with a square-toe twist. Her hat was the centerpiece to the entire outfit, due for a spotlight.
“I designed it myself, branding my name on the back for a personalized touch, then added a belt band and feathers to finish it off,” she explained. “It was the perfect combination of classic western and modern flair, making the entire outfit feel unique and authentically me,” Pegues added. She blended nostalgia with her current signature style. Micah noted that another stand out look comprised of cow-print bell-bottoms, a white top, a cowboy hat, and simple boots. “What made this outfit truly special was how much I loved those pants and how I wanted to wear them everywhere,” she said. That look was one of her earliest expressions of personal style. That moment led to the fashion-obsessed woman she is today.
If you scored any Cowboy Carter tour tickets (or are attending a Rodeo soon), Pegues has some outfit ideas for you. She shared that she’d wear a corset or structured blazer with Western embroidery paired with long, dramatic fringe gloves, over-the-knee cowboy boots, and a skirt to embrace the fusions of Beyoncé’s signature high-fashion aesthetic and Western wear.
Some key trends to keep a lookout for, in Pegues’s opinion, are branded hats as the latest must-have accessory, monochromatic looks embracing hues of browns, blacks, and beige, and the denim on denim trend. Pairing baby tees with boot-cut jeans and bold belts and cow print, which never goes out of style to her, are all in her Rolodex of trends, adding a “playful, youthful twist on Western style.”
Tips and tricks she recommends start out with comfort and then style, a formula for making a statement with your look. She notes a statement hat to build around your look and elevate it. Next, think denim. It could be a denim two piece set of a jacket and flared or high-waisted jeans or shorts or a skirt. Then the other star of the show, cowboy boots, an essential for the rodeo to Pegues.
“Go for something comfortable, but don’t shy away from a little extra flair, whether it’s embellishments like rhinestones or unique stitching,” she said. To build upon your go-to accessories, add a statement belt like a chain belt or a one with a large buckle, then add your go-to purse that goes with a rodeo theme. “Lastly, be confident in what you wear and just have fun with it and own your look!. Rodeo style is all about embracing that rugged charm while still staying true to your own sense of fashion,” the content creator advises.
