As someone who travels both domestically and internationally 10-15 times per year, where I lay my head at night is essential. When traveling with friends or family, I like to stay in an Airbnb as there’s more space we might want to throw down in the kitchen, giving us a chance to visit somewhere unique with a local flair. If comfort is number one on the criteria list, design is right behind it. While I’m still on the way to making my own home feel straight out of the pages of Architectural Digest, I can certainly pay for the experience with an Airbnb.
And when that beautiful home away from home is Black-owned? That’s just the cherry on top. When #AirbnbWhileBlack started trending back in 2016, Black guests became weary of the platform as Airbnb’s guest policies didn’t include much protection in ensuring guests were safe from potentially racist and discriminatory hosts. A solution can be choosing to book with a Black Airbnb host. Finding a Black host on your own can be challenging as there are no filters for identifying the culture. However, it’s worth the effort for peace of mind during your stay.
Knowing this, whether it’s while perusing the stands at a local market or through eating at a food truck recommended by a friend, I’m always looking for ways to support Black-owned businesses any chance I can. At the same time, on the road—my accommodations are no different.
