As tradition would have it this Thanksgiving, President Obama pardoned two hefty turkeys today. According to the Huffington Post, turkeys Liberty and Peace, weighing in at 45 lbs. each, were spared. Both Malia and Sasha Obama were on hand for the ceremony.
President Obama said that although Thanksgiving is popular with the American people, it tends to be a frightful one for our birds. “They don’t have it so good,” he concluded.
In total, more than 100 names were submitted for a pardon today, no word on how many will actually be granted.
This year’s birds were from the great state of Minnesota and will now spend the rest of their days at George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, where they’ll be on display until January 6th.
Up next for the First Family is the annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and their annual Christmas in Washington event, this year featuring Jennifer Hudson.
