If ever there was a more mind-bending or thought provoking film to debut this year, it’s Cloud Atlas.

Starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, the film, adapted from the 2004 novel, takes on the concept of constantly re-meeting people in different lives across time. According to the film’s synopsis, Cloud Atlas “explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future.” Berry plays several roles throughout the film including an investigative journalist and a representative from a futuristic society.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the actors play multiple roles to blend the various narratives together and add a sense of connectivity throughout time.

The film is directed by a grand trio including Andy and Lana Wachowski, the directors of the Matrix, and Tom Tywker, the director of Run Lola Run.
