Rape has been in the headlines over the past few days after Missouri Republican Todd Akin’s shocking “legitimate rape” comments. Today, actress and rape survivor Gabrielle Union is voicing her opinion on Akin’s remarks, saying she was “saddened” and “shocked” to hear them.
Joining a panel on MSNBC’s Now with Alex Wagner, Union said, “I shot Todd a little Twitter message kindly explaining that all rape is legitimate. And that every rape victim should have equal access to services and justice.”
President Obama weighed in on the critical comments yesterday during a press conference and assured everyone he was disturbed by Akins point of view. “The views expressed were offensive,” said Obama. “Rape is rape. The idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we are talking about doesn’t make sense to the American people and certainly doesn’t make sense to me.”
Akin has since apologized for his remarks.
