Ava DuVernay’s love of film was sparked by an aunt who also loved film.

In a new video for the MAKERS storytelling platform, the Selma director talks about her childhood, early influences and her big break. She also details the hardships she came up against as she tried to raise money for her first project, I Will Follow.

“It was odd. Studios were not interested in the inner lives of Black women like I thought they would be. Go figure.”
