US President Barack Obama (L) and First Lady Michelle Obama © arrive at Andrews Air Force Base, MD, November 10, 2009. Obama joins this shaken military community Tuesday in mourning victims of a bloody rampage amid growing questions about the chief suspect’s links to militant Islam. In a television interview on the eve of his visit, Obama said the question being asked was: ‘’Is this an individual who’s acting in this way or is it some larger set of actors?’’ Major Nidal Hasan emerged from a coma and was able to talk for the first time since he allegedly opened fire on fellow soldiers November 5, killing 13 people and wounding 42 others before being gunned down by a female police officer.
The First Lady is seemingly laying low today but I managed to grab this pic for you all from the White House Flickr site.

The First Lady leading a discussion with a group of female students including Jasmine Gross (left) and Iris Vigil (right) during an event to kick off a White House leadership and mentoring initiative. Here’s a snippet of Mrs. Obama’s speech to the mentees:
“There are kids like me and Barack who grew up in modest circumstances, who didn’t have access to a whole lot of resources. But one thing that we did have were a few people in our lives who really took an interest, people who really wanted us to flourish. And that’s really all that it takes. It doesn’t take anything more than consistency and love.”
Although I read the online version earlier in the week, yesterday’s New York Times Magazine cover story on the First Marriage brightened up my Sunday. Why? Lady O revealed that she had a standing Friday manicure and hair appointment back in Chicago for her weekly date with hubby and of long-term relationships she said candidly, “The bumps happen to everybody all the time, and they are continuous.”
If you haven’t read it already, (shame on you!) be sure to check it out.

Check out these interesting pumpkins carved in the likeness of President Obama and the First Lady. They were sitting on display at the Old Navy Urban Pumpkin Patch in Manhattan (New York City) on October 23, 2009.
Do you think these pumpkins are fun or foolish? Leave me a comment with your thoughts.
Look what I found while snooping around on the White House Flickr site. A cool pic of Mrs. Obama and Queen Silvia of Sweden meeting in the Yellow Oval Room of the White House on October 23, 2009.
I wonder what they were discussing…
The First Lady and students from Bancroft and Kimball Elementary Schools harvest herbs and vegetables in the garden on the South Lawn in D.C. this afternoon. Mrs. Obama invited the local school children to help with the fall veggie harvest in the garden at the White House.
Mrs. Obama with a student from Bancroft Kimball Elementary Schools. The First Lady talked to the children about the importance (and financial benefits) of healthy eating.
“For less than two hundred dollars we have planted enough food to feed not just the folks at the White House, but we’ve also given a lot of food to some of our neighbors, and we’re going to do that today,” Mrs. Obama explained.
New York Yankees legend and Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra is escorted on the field with Mrs. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden during Game 1 of the 2009 MLB World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

The First Lady speaks at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx before attending Game 1 of the 2009 World Series which is being dedicated to “Welcome Back Heros.”
Yet another book praising the style of Mrs. Obama is officially on bookshelves today. Top blogger turner author Mary Tomer penned “Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy” (Center Street) and the book includes interviews with folks like veteran Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Robin Givhan.
By the way, a festive Lady O appears on the cover of the December 2009 issue of Glamour magazine. Glamour editors honored the biggest Women of 2009 in the issue so of course Mrs. Obama topped the list.
The First Lady and the Dr. Jill Biden will be in the Big Apple tomorrow for Game 1 of the World Series! Earlier in the day both ladies will also join Major League Baseball and the New York Yankees in visiting patients at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx.
Full Disclosure: I’m partial to the book on your left. You see, I witnessed ESSENCE Senior Editor Patrik Henry Bass work tirelessly to put this coffee table book together. The tome contains special speeches, memorable quotes (you know, the ones you stick on your fridge) and exclusive photos.
So, consider picking up “The Obamas in the White House: Reflections on Family, Faith & Leadership” for more insider scoop on the First Lady.
As I mentioned last week, Mrs. Obama checked in via satellite with talk show host Jay Leno on Friday night. Although she was the one being grilled, the First Lady definitely kept Leno on his toes during the segment.
Mrs. O, who admitted that Stevie Wonder is her musical hero, debuted her PSA with Jill Biden for military families, revealed that the President often beats her in tennis and showed off her knowledge of her favorite childhood show, “The Brady Brunch” by naming all six children on the sitcom.
I personally loved that she wore the same Thakoon dress she also wore while her husband was campaigning last year. Shopping in your own closet ROCKS!
Mrs. Obama spoke during a breast cancer awareness event in the First Lady’s Garden at the White House earlier today.
The afternoon event highlighted the need for health care reform and how pre-existing conditions affect insurance coverage of breast cancer patients.
The First Lady applauds with breast cancer survivors Vernal Branch (left) and Joni Lownsdale (right) during the breast cancer awareness event at the White House today. Below is a snippet of Mrs. Obama’s speech:
“Let’s remember that there was a time when those affected by breast cancer never could have imagined all these pink ribbons that would one day grace the White House, offices, storefronts, lapels.
And it is my hope that if we pass health insurance reform, then 20 or 30 years from now, our daughters and our granddaughters won’t be able to imagine a time when any woman in this country couldn’t get a mammogram because she couldn’t afford it."
The White House released the official Obama family photograph. Celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz photographed the family on September 1st, sitting in the Green Room of the White House.
Although I can’t see all of Mrs. Obama’s skirt what I can take in appears very futuristic…Loves that!
What do you guys think of the portrait?
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Robin Givhan from the Washington Post spoke on a panel about women and fashion in New York City last night and of course Mrs. Obama came up. Givhan pointed out that she would love to see the First Lady wear the downtown style of American designer Marc Jacobs. Hmmm. I guess I’m not mad at that. She added that Mrs. O has set an example for a lot of women who are over the age of 30 and felt disenfranchised by the fashion industry.
“She is perfect example that you can incorporate fashion into your life, and what makes you look good doesn’t necessarily negate your I.Q.,” Givhan said.
Stay tuned to see if Mrs. Obama wears Marc Jacobs in the near future…
The First Lady spoke during the Healthy Kids Fair with local public school students and their families on the South Lawn of the White House earlier today.
The focus was on health and wellness, nutrition and physical fitness. Experienced chefs and nutritionists from around the country demonstrated healthy cooking, and preparing affordable meals for families. Mrs. Obama was joined by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who also delivered remarks.
The First Lady hula hoops on the South Lawn of the White House during the event promoting exercise and healthy eating for children this afternoon. Today’s Healthy Kids Fair is the latest initiative Mrs. Obama has taken part in to promote healthier living for all Americans.
Mrs. Obama got her Double Dutch on during the event, too!
During Mrs. Obama’s remarks, she pointed out:
“When I was growing up, fast food was a treat. You know, we couldn’t afford to get fast food every week, so it was something you did on a special occasion. And we didn’t have dessert every single night.”
“This administration is going to be working hard to reauthorize our federal Child Nutrition program, because with 30 million kids relying on a school breakfast or a lunch as one of their primary meals of the day, we need to make sure that these meals are nutritious and well balanced, and that more kids can have access.”
The First Lady Michelle speaking during a visit to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C. earlier today. To her left is Alan Zanella, a retired Marine. Here’s a bit of what Mrs. Obama had to say:
On Thursday, the President will keep a promise that he made on the campaign by signing into law the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act. This legislation guarantees a timely and predictable flow of funding for VA medical care because that’s what’s required to guarantee better care to the men and women who serve this country.
After all, our veterans’ unwavering belief in this country is what inspired them to serve in the first place. They deserve our unwavering support in return.
NBC has announced that the First Lady will respond to ten questions on the “Jay Leno Show” in the popular “10 @ 10” segment. This visit will mark the first time Lady O appears with Leno since his move to prime time.
The First Lady, who will visit the show via satellite from Washington D.C., will answer Jay’s questions this Friday, October 23.
Do you plan on tuning in to view the First Lady on the “Jay Leno Show” on Friday? If you were Leno, what would you ask her?
President Obama and First Lady Michelle took Malia and Sasha to school yesterday, taking part in parent-teacher conferences in the early morning.
The Presidential motorcade first stopped at the elementary campus of the Sidwell Friends School in Bethesda, Maryland, a D.C. suburb, where Sasha, 8, is in third grade. After that, they traveled to the main Sidwell campus in Northwest Washington where Malia, 11, is in sixth grade.
The school was expecting Mrs. Obama; but the First Lady decided to bring along her hubby as well to the administration’s surprise.
The First Lady will be featured in the November 2009 issue of U.S. News & World Report. Mrs. Obama penned a commentary on the U.S. education system in the issue. Here’s a snippet:
This is a busy time of year in the Obama household. Like so many parents all across this country, I watch with a mixture of pride and anxiety as my daughters stuff their backpacks, kiss me goodbye, and move ahead in another new school year without so much as a backwards glance.
We need parents to do their with leadership at home. We need to set limits and turn off the TV; we need to put away those video games and make sure that homework gets done. We need to reinforce the example that’s being set and the lessons being taught at school and make sure that learning continues at home."
The First Lady has a lot going on today. She will be in Florida to attend the Florida Campus Compact (FL|CC) annual Awards Gala and Luncheon at the National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College. And she’s also headed to to Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base in the afternoon where she will meet with base leaders and military families. This visit is part of the First Lady’s ongoing outreach to military families.
The First Lady having a good ‘ole time at the White House music series ’Fiesta Latina’ on the South Lawn last night. Salsa and Spanish classical music was featured. This concert is part of the ongoing music series the White House began earlier this year.
Participants included Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, the Bachata music group Aventura, and the Chicano rock band Los Lobos, with Sheila E. leading the house band.
Mrs. Obama was met by more than 400 cheering employees at the Department of Health and Human Services in D.C. today. The First Lady talked a lot about childhood obesity. She stressed it as a “major public health threat” that in 20-30 years will translate into more incidence of heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure.
She added that about one in three U.S. children now are overweight or obese; it’s about one in two among African-American and Hispanic children. Mrs. Obama also urged Americans to make small changes like adding fruits to diets, ditching sugary sodas for water and cooking at home more often.
Lastly, she pointed out the Recovery Act has $1 billion in funding for prevention and wellness programs.

The company that created the President Obama action figure, Jailbreak Toys, has done the same for the First Lady. Jason Feinberg of Jailbreak Toys says he thinks the Michelle Obama doll will outdo the President’s version, which has already racked up $200,000 sales.
Each doll will come with one of three dresses, all designed to show off the First Lady’s infamous arms. Mrs. Obama’s doll is scheduled to hit stores on November 20.
Are you considering purchasing this doll? Why or why not?
The First Lady and President are joined by Girl Scouts and Girl Scouts officials in the White House. Yesterday, Mrs. Obama formally accepted the role of Honorary National President of Girl Scouts of the USA! Every First Lady since 1917 has been honorary president of the organization.
Mrs. Obama is flanked by Girl Scouts CEO Kathy Cloninger and National Board Chair Connie L. Lindsey. The three women, along with President Obama met in an effort to pave the way for future discussions and collaborations around their shared agenda on girls and women’s issues.
“It is my great pleasure to serve as Honorary National President of Girl Scouts,” said Mrs. Obama. “With their innovative new programming, ground-breaking research, and emphasis on service and leadership, Girl Scouts is preparing the women of tomorrow to be a positive force for change – in their own lives, their communities, and across the globe.”
President Obama and the First Lady arriving to an event for local middle school students to star gaze and conduct hands-on experiments with astronomers yesterday evening on the South Lawn of the White House.
The event was held in honor of World Space Week and over 100 students attended. Malia and Sasha joined in on the fun as well.
Yesterday I read an in-depth article in The New York Times about the First Lady and her ancestry. The newly discovered story of Mrs. Obama’s maternal ancestors—the slave mother, White father and their biracial son, Dolphus T. Shields—for the first time fully connects the first African-American First Lady to the history of slavery, tracing their five-generation journey.
The findings were uncovered by Megan Smolenyak, a genealogist and The New York Times. The outlines of Mrs. Obama’s family history were unfolded with 19th century probate records, yellowing marriage licenses, fading photographs and the recollections of elderly women who remember the family.
These findings are not necessarily news to most of us who know the history of slavery in this country, but it is a reminder of how far America has come.
With the help of museum curators, Mrs. Obama has chosen 45 pieces of art to grace the walls of the White House private residence and offices.
There are works by African Americans (seven paintings from three artists, out of a total of 47) four Native Americans and six women.
One painting of note is “Black Like Me #2,” on loan from the Hirshhorn (at the Smithsonian), by Glenn Ligon. Ligon is thought of as being one of the best African American artists working today, and also one of the smartest and toughest, according to The Washington Post.
The Associated Press just released a report on the First Lady and the number of people it takes to run her life. Interesting stuff:
– Mrs. Obama has a staff of 24 people, at a cost of more than $1.5 million, according to an annual White House report to Congress.
– About 32,000 pieces of mail have flooded the Lady O’s base of operations in the East Wing since she arrived in January. Two staffers and a group of volunteers open and answer them.
– If she goes anywhere beyond the gates of the White House, complicated travel and security arrangements are required.
The article didn’t mention whether or not Mrs. Obama has staff members to help her arrange sleepovers for Malia and Sasha and assist with science projects but something tells me she takes those duties on herself.
Some folks are in a tizzy over the First Lady’s speech to the IOC regarding her deceased father in Denmark last week.
“Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad’s lap, cheering on Carl Lewis and others for their brilliance and perfection,” recalled the First Lady.
The blogosphere backlash: She wasn’t sitting on her dad’s lap when she was cheering on Carl Lewis. In 1984, at the age of 20, she couldn’t have been sitting on her dad’s lap watching Lewis compete in the Olympics.
The above backlash also accused Mrs. Obama’s speechwriter of being sloppy while other blogs are flat out calling the First Lady a liar.
Hmmm. Mrs. O might have very well sat in her dad’s lap at 20. Or this might have been a minor slip-up. What do you think? Is this “tizzy” just hateration or could it be justifiable?
The White House is now offering tours of its Kitchen Garden to students in local elementary, middle or high schools in the D.C. area.
White House chefs will offer tours of the South Lawn’s garden, a peek at the beehive and tips on healthy eating. Interested groups will need to complete an application between one and three months in advance. Tours will be offered most Tuesdays and Thursdays at mornings. However, the tour will not include a stop inside the White House.
The First Lady and President Obama celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary at the Blue Duck Tavern near the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. on Saturday evening. This award-winning restaurant primarily serves locally sourced and organic food which is right in line with the First Lady’s health initiatives.
Mrs. Obama paired her black cocktail dress and heels with an electric blue clutch for the romantic evening out with her hubby.
The President and the First Lady walk hand-in-hand on the South Lawn after arriving back at the White House earlier today following a world wind trip to Denmark. President Obama leaning in to embrace the First Lady after he presented Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics this morning in Copenhagen. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote on the destiny of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games after a final round battle today!
UPDATE: The votes are in and Chicago is out. However, the First Lady gave it her all for Chi-town. Here’s a snippet of her speech:
“I never dreamed that the Olympic flame might one day light up lives in my neighborhood.” But today, I can dream, and I am dreaming of an Olympic and Paralympic Games in Chicago that will light up lives in neighborhoods all across America and all across the world."
“Sports were a gift I shared with my dad, especially the Olympic Games. Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad’s lap, cheering on Olga and Nadia, Carl Lewis and others for their brilliance and perfection.”
Mrs. Obama wearing Michael Kors during the Chicago 2016 bid presentation to be the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Being the dynamic speaker that she is, I’m sure Lady O left a favorable impression on the IOC. But, the competition was thick. Japan’s new Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama promised a Tokyo event would build bridges with the world and ensure a green future.
The First Lady arrives to the opening ceremony of the 121st session of the International Olympic Congress yesterday in Copenhagen. Her gold cocktail dress with a fitted bodice and pleated skirt is accented with a trio of the First Lady’s signature brooches.

Will Chi-town be the winner? If so, will it be because of Mrs. Obama’s efforts?
Mrs. Obama knows the way to Sesame Street and she’s making her way back later this fall. The First Lady’s office announced yesterday that to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the hit PBS series “Sesame Street” with an appearance on the November 10 season. The show is geared toward getting kids to grow and later eat veggies. Mrs. Obama first appeared on Sesame Street earlier this year.
The First Lady is introduced by friend and television titan Oprah Winfrey before speaking at a dinner yesterday in Copenhagen. Both ladies are in Denmark representing Chi-Town as they rally for their beloved Midwest city to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.
More celebs are showing their appreciation for Mrs. Obama. The latest display is from music’s bad girl Pink. The Philly singer announced that she’s a certified fan of Lady O at a D.C. concert earlier this week and praised Mrs. Obama for not wearing fur before launching into her hit “Dear Mr. President.”
“I have to give a shout-out to Michelle Obama. I love an animal-lovin’ First Lady!” screamed Pink.

The First Lady graces the cover of the November 2009 issue of Prevention magazine. Check out what Mrs. Obama candidly shared on the realities of motherhood and family:
“Throughout my life, I’ve learned to make choices that make me happy and make sense for me. Even my husband is happier when I’m happy. I have freed myself to put me on the priority list and say, yes, I can make choices that make me happy, and it will ripple and benefit my kids, my husband and my physical health.”
Mrs. O sat for the interview at the White House in July and in the cover story also discusses what jewels she learned about motherhood from her own mom Mrs. Robinson, how she maintains a holistic healthy lifestyle and why she’s not afraid of aging.
Standing in front of a backdrop of the Chicago skyline, Mrs. Obama spoke in support of Chicago hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics earlier today in Copenhagen. A chosen committee will choose the winning city in a vote on Friday, October 2, 2009 in Copenhagen.
I wonder if Mrs. Obama plans to address the staggering youth violence taking place in the Windy City as of late…

The “Michelle Melt” at Good Stuff Eatery in Washington, D.C. was unveiled today by chef Spike Mendelsohn, a former contestant on Bravo’s “Top Chef.” Mendelsohn developed it in collaboration with White House chef Sam Kass who previously cooked for the Obamas in Chicago.
The recipe: free range turkey burger, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, ruby red tomato, crisp lettuce, South Lawn herb garden mayo (contains the same herbs that are found in the White House garden started by Mrs. O) and a freshly baked wheat bun.
Mendelsohn plans to donate proceeds from the burger’s sale to the D.C. Central Kitchen which distributes food to homeless people.

There is yet another book on the shelves about The First Couple. But “Barack and Michelle: Portrait of An American Marriage” (William Morrow) is different from the pack. Penned by New York Times best-selling author Christopher Andersen, the tome delves into some un-pretty details on this love affair we rarely hear about.
Reportedly, the book claims the First Lady gave her husband the silent treatment at one point in his campaign because so many women “pushed their bodies up against his and slipped phone numbers into his pockets.”
“Michelle, understandably was not amused,” Andersen writes. He quotes her as saying, “…I want to tell these women, ‘Back off. Get a life.’ It’s just embarrassing.”
Are you interested in reading this book? Why or why not? Sound off!
Makeup artist veteran Derrick Rutledge checked in with me about working with the First Lady. Rutledge first worked with Mrs. Obama last March and has also provided his services for Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and CeCe Winans. Here’s what he had to say:
On Mrs. Obama’s flawless complexion:
Exercise and lots of water are the first steps toward better skin. She exercises regularly and encourages the entire country to do so, too.
Products Used When Working With Mrs. Obama:
I custom blend products for her; they can’t be purchased.
Makeup Tips for Working Moms Who Are Inspired by Mrs. Obama’s look:
Keep your look simple and clean. Important: Find someone who knows your face shape and can contour your natural eyebrows. Poorly shaped brows can prevent a flawless face from looking stunning.
President Obama pulled out his secret weapon again this morning. The First Lady amplified his message on the country’s need for health care reform during an event in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. She discussed the plan’s impact by featuring stories about women and families affected by the current health care system. She also shared how important the health and wellness of her own daughters Malia and Sasha forces her to consider all mothers of every income and class when encouraging health care reform support.
The First Lady hugs Debi Trauth of Cincinatti during the event. Trauth is a widow with a teenage son who recently lost her job. Also pictured at left is Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
During her speech, Mrs. Obama pointed out that women usually carry the load when it comes to dealing with health care (they’re the ones who choose their children’s doctors, make and take the kids to appointments, etc.). There was knowing laughter from the almost exclusively female audience when she noted that women are also the ones who are responsible for dealing with their husband’s care.
President Obama and the First Lady arriving to a ceremony to award the Medal of Honor to Sergeant First Class Jared C. Monti for his heroic actions in Afghanistan, at the White House yesterday. Monti sacrificed his own life in an effort to save a injured comrade while on patrol in Afghanistan June 21, 2006.
Mrs. Obama visited a new farmers market located just two blocks from the White House earlier today. The market offers meats and produce and local farmers. The First Lady picked up chocolate milk (maybe for Malia and Sasha?), black kale, eggs, cherry tomatoes, mixed hot peppers, pears, fingerling potatoes and cheese.
“I’ve learned that when my family eats fresh, healthy food, that it affects how we feel, how we get through the day, and that’s whether we’re trying to get through math homework or whether there’s a Cabinet meeting or whether we’re just walking the dog,” shared Mrs. Obama.
I just read a thought-provoking commentary by Leslie Sanchez on CNN.com about the First Lady. It covers Mrs. Obama’s style and how her fashion choices have a much larger meaning than most of us probably realize.
Good stuff.
President Obama plants a big one on the First Lady’s cheek as they arrive at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute 32nd Annual Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. last night.

Last week the White House announced that the First Lady will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark, in support of Chicago’s historic bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. On October 2, Mrs. Obama will attend the 121st International Olympic Committee Session at the Bella Center – Copenhagen Congress Center. There the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics will be selected from the remaining four candidate cities: Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to the President and fellow Chi-town representer, will accompany the First Lady to Copenhagen.
“There is no doubt in my mind that Chicago would offer the world a fantastic setting for these historic games and I hope that the Olympic torch will have the chance to burn brightly in my hometown,” shared the First Lady.
The Obamas were busy last Friday. The White House just released this photo of Mrs. Obama and the President meeting with the Crown Prince and Princess of the Netherlands in the Yellow Oval Room on September 11 after their 9/11 tribute.
Doesn’t the First Lady’s scarlet sheath look familiar? She also wore it to meet with Laura Bush at the White House shortly after President Obama won the election. Recessionistas take note!
Check out the First Lady participating in a United We Serve volunteer event at a Habitat For Humanity site in D.C. on September 11. She is flanked by Julie Bindelglass, a junior at George Washington University and Shakir Cannon-Moye, a senior, to kick off the First Lady’s challenge to George Washington University students to give back.
Another great shot of Mrs. Obama painting on September 11. George Washington University students have committed to perform 100,000 hours of community service to secure Mrs. Obama’s attendance as their commencement speaker in spring 2010.
Nice!
President Obama and the First Lady observe a moment of silence to mark the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. Here, they bow their heads on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC.
President and Mrs. Obama on the South Lawn as they continue to observe the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Later today the President will deliver remarks and participate in a wreath laying ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
Mrs. Obama with Vicki Kennedy (second right), wife of the late Senator Edward Kennedy, and Jill Biden (right), before President Obama addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress at the U.S. Capitol last night in Washington, DC. The President addressed the joint session to urge passage of his national healthcare plan.
Looks like the First Lady was being an extra supportive wife before her hubby’s big speech. By the way, what do you think of her dusty rose Moschino suit?
During the speech, Lady O didn’t just sit with members of the political elite. Several working class folks who have been directly impacted by our country’s present healthcare system were very nearby. They included Dave Gorman, a Vietnam vet from Gaithersburg, Maryland and Katie Gibson, a recurrent cancer survivor from Bozeman, Montana.
Tonight, President Obama is scheduled to deliver a speech to a joint session of Congress about his hopes for creating affordable health care for everyone in this country.
Sitting in Mrs. Obama’s box in the House gallery will be several Americans who have suffered from high medical costs and insurance practices.
I hope to share pics and more updates tomorrow morning on the First Lady’s role in this important speech.
I recently read in The Chicago Tribune about a new jazz work inspired by the life of the First Lady. The composition about Mrs. Obama had its world premiere in Chi-Town last Tuesday at the Spertus Institute. It was commissioned by the Jazz Institute of Chicago.
One highlight of this work seems to be when singer Dee Alexander — assuming Michelle Obama’s voice — cried out: “How could I know?” How could Mrs. O have anticipated, in other words, that the man she married would become a symbol to millions?
Fitting that this show would launch in Mrs. Obama’s hometown of Chicago. I wonder how long it will be before other cities begin to follow with similar musical tributes.
So, you thought the hoopla over Mrs. Obama’s arms was over? Think again. The latest issue of Women’s Health magazine has an exclusive interview with the First Lady’s long-time personal trainer, Cornell McClellan. He’s claimed to have put Lady O through 1,872 workouts. She started working with McClellan at his Chicago fitness studio, Naturally Fit back in 1997.
“She’s truly committed herself to the importance of health and fitness,” McClellan told Women’s Health. He added, “We take a holistic approach that includes strength, cardiovascular, and flexibility training.”
The First Lady and daughter Malia as walk across the South Lawn after arriving at the White House in Washington on September 6, 2009. The Obamas had spent several days at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.
Another pic of the Obamas returning home last weekend to the White House after spending a little time at Camp David. Both Malia and Sasha (not shown) are scheduled to return to their school, Sidwell Friends, today.
The President and First Lady were interviewed earlier this week at the Whie House by TIME Magazine Managing Editor Rick Stengel. This shot was taken during the interview of the First Couple. Looking forward to the story… (Doesn’t Mr. Obama look very interested in whatever the First Lady is saying?)
In light of the recent TIME magazine article regarding the First Lady’s hair, I checked in with uber hair stylist Tippi Shorter. She has worked with starlets like Alicia Keys and Rihanna. Below are Shorter’s top strand tips for achieving a ‘do like Mrs. Obama’s:
1 – Trims are extremely important for maintaining the sleek lines in a bob cut like the one Mrs. O sports.
2 – The Smart Heat Flatiron from Gold-N-Hot is great because you don’t have to worry about selecting a temperature.
3 – Ojon Daily Intensive Shine Treatment keeps hair shiny and moisturized yet doesn’t weigh it down for ultimate body like Lady O’s tresses.
As you guys should know, the majority of the Muslim community is presently observing the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. I would be remiss in not mentioning the White House dinner that the President and First Lady hosted on last night. The affair was held in the State Dining Room and guests reportedly dined on a delicious meal of chicken, peas, potato-leek puree and date and almond-studded salad. For the inside scoop on this dinner, check out this blog post of our Washington Correspondent Cynthia Gordy.
Earlier this week the White House released an exclusive video of Mrs. Obama spilling the beans about her garden. Kudos to her team for releasing it now since there has been so much speculation recently about this garden containing toxic veggies and what not.
After you view it, leave me a comment and let me know what you think.
I found this image snooping around on the White House Web site. I like this pic of the President and First Lady casually talking in the Blue Room, don’t you? This picture was taken before the start of the Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony on August 12.
More digging for rarely before seen pics…I also uncovered this gem on the White House Web site. Here, the President looks at a birthday card with Sasha during a party with his staff in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on August 4. The First Lady and Malia look on from the left. Desiree Rogers is in floral on the right observing with a smile as well.
The Obama foursome happily walk on the South Lawn upon return to the White House yesterday. It looks like they enjoyed their week-long vacation at Martha’s Vineyard.
The First Lady and President during the funeral services for Senator Edward Kennedy on August 29. Former President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush were also in attendance. The services took place at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Roxbury section of Boston.
During the President’s eulogy he called Kennedy “a champion for those who had none; the soul of the Democratic Party.”
