11/2/09: Notes on a Marriage

Although I read the online version earlier in the week, yesterday’s New York Times Magazine cover story on the First Marriage brightened up my Sunday. Why? Lady O revealed that she had a standing Friday manicure and hair appointment back in Chicago for her weekly date with hubby and of long-term relationships she said candidly, “The bumps happen to everybody all the time, and they are continuous.”
If you haven’t read it already, (shame on you!) be sure to check it out.

10/26/09 – Late Night Dish

As I mentioned last week, Mrs. Obama checked in via satellite with talk show host Jay Leno on Friday night. Although she was the one being grilled, the First Lady definitely kept Leno on his toes during the segment.

Mrs. O, who admitted that Stevie Wonder is her musical hero, debuted her PSA with Jill Biden for military families, revealed that the President often beats her in tennis and showed off her knowledge of her favorite childhood show, “The Brady Brunch” by naming all six children on the sitcom.

I personally loved that she wore the same Thakoon dress she also wore while her husband was campaigning last year. Shopping in your own closet ROCKS!

“Let’s remember that there was a time when those affected by breast cancer never could have imagined all these pink ribbons that would one day grace the White House, offices, storefronts, lapels.

And it is my hope that if we pass health insurance reform, then 20 or 30 years from now, our daughters and our granddaughters won’t be able to imagine a time when any woman in this country couldn’t get a mammogram because she couldn’t afford it."

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Robin Givhan from the Washington Post spoke on a panel about women and fashion in New York City last night and of course Mrs. Obama came up. Givhan pointed out that she would love to see the First Lady wear the downtown style of American designer Marc Jacobs. Hmmm. I guess I’m not mad at that. She added that Mrs. O has set an example for a lot of women who are over the age of 30 and felt disenfranchised by the fashion industry.

“She is perfect example that you can incorporate fashion into your life, and what makes you look good doesn’t necessarily negate your I.Q.,” Givhan said.

Stay tuned to see if Mrs. Obama wears Marc Jacobs in the near future…

“This administration is going to be working hard to reauthorize our federal Child Nutrition program, because with 30 million kids relying on a school breakfast or a lunch as one of their primary meals of the day, we need to make sure that these meals are nutritious and well balanced, and that more kids can have access.”

On Thursday, the President will keep a promise that he made on the campaign by signing into law the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act. This legislation guarantees a timely and predictable flow of funding for VA medical care because that’s what’s required to guarantee better care to the men and women who serve this country.

This is a busy time of year in the Obama household. Like so many parents all across this country, I watch with a mixture of pride and anxiety as my daughters stuff their backpacks, kiss me goodbye, and move ahead in another new school year without so much as a backwards glance.

We need parents to do their with leadership at home. We need to set limits and turn off the TV; we need to put away those video games and make sure that homework gets done. We need to reinforce the example that’s being set and the lessons being taught at school and make sure that learning continues at home."

10/8/09 – Modern Day Roots

Yesterday I read an in-depth article in The New York Times about the First Lady and her ancestry. The newly discovered story of Mrs. Obama’s maternal ancestors—the slave mother, White father and their biracial son, Dolphus T. Shields—for the first time fully connects the first African-American First Lady to the history of slavery, tracing their five-generation journey.

The findings were uncovered by Megan Smolenyak, a genealogist and The New York Times. The outlines of Mrs. Obama’s family history were unfolded with 19th century probate records, yellowing marriage licenses, fading photographs and the recollections of elderly women who remember the family.

These findings are not necessarily news to most of us who know the history of slavery in this country, but it is a reminder of how far America has come.

10/6/09 – A 24 Women Show

The Associated Press just released a report on the First Lady and the number of people it takes to run her life. Interesting stuff:

– Mrs. Obama has a staff of 24 people, at a cost of more than $1.5 million, according to an annual White House report to Congress.

– About 32,000 pieces of mail have flooded the Lady O’s base of operations in the East Wing since she arrived in January. Two staffers and a group of volunteers open and answer them.

– If she goes anywhere beyond the gates of the White House, complicated travel and security arrangements are required.

The article didn’t mention whether or not Mrs. Obama has staff members to help her arrange sleepovers for Malia and Sasha and assist with science projects but something tells me she takes those duties on herself.

10/6/09 – A Little White Lie?

Some folks are in a tizzy over the First Lady’s speech to the IOC regarding her deceased father in Denmark last week.

“Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad’s lap, cheering on Carl Lewis and others for their brilliance and perfection,” recalled the First Lady.

The blogosphere backlash: She wasn’t sitting on her dad’s lap when she was cheering on Carl Lewis. In 1984, at the age of 20, she couldn’t have been sitting on her dad’s lap watching Lewis compete in the Olympics.

The above backlash also accused Mrs. Obama’s speechwriter of being sloppy while other blogs are flat out calling the First Lady a liar.

Hmmm. Mrs. O might have very well sat in her dad’s lap at 20. Or this might have been a minor slip-up. What do you think? Is this “tizzy” just hateration or could it be justifiable?

There is yet another book on the shelves about The First Couple. But “Barack and Michelle: Portrait of An American Marriage” (William Morrow) is different from the pack. Penned by New York Times best-selling author Christopher Andersen, the tome delves into some un-pretty details on this love affair we rarely hear about.

Reportedly, the book claims the First Lady gave her husband the silent treatment at one point in his campaign because so many women “pushed their bodies up against his and slipped phone numbers into his pockets.”

“Michelle, understandably was not amused,” Andersen writes. He quotes her as saying, “…I want to tell these women, ‘Back off. Get a life.’ It’s just embarrassing.”

The President and First Lady deuce it out in a fencing match during the White House event today.

They were joined by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, representatives from Chicago2016, United States Olympians and Paralympians, along with schoolchildren from local D.C. area schools to discuss the ideals of the Olympic movement and the Obama administration’s commitment to expanding access to healthy, constructive activities like sports for all of our nation’s children.

9/15/09 – Lady in Red

The Obamas were busy last Friday. The White House just released this photo of Mrs. Obama and the President meeting with the Crown Prince and Princess of the Netherlands in the Yellow Oval Room on September 11 after their 9/11 tribute.

Doesn’t the First Lady’s scarlet sheath look familiar? She also wore it to meet with Laura Bush at the White House shortly after President Obama won the election. Recessionistas take note!

The President addressed the joint session to urge passage of his national healthcare plan.

Looks like the First Lady was being an extra supportive wife before her hubby’s big speech. By the way, what do you think of her dusty rose Moschino suit?

9/10/09 – The People’s First Lady

During the speech, Lady O didn’t just sit with members of the political elite. Several working class folks who have been directly impacted by our country’s present healthcare system were very nearby. They included Dave Gorman, a Vietnam vet from Gaithersburg, Maryland and Katie Gibson, a recurrent cancer survivor from Bozeman, Montana.

9/9/09 – Health Matters

Tonight, President Obama is scheduled to deliver a speech to a joint session of Congress about his hopes for creating affordable health care for everyone in this country.

Sitting in Mrs. Obama’s box in the House gallery will be several Americans who have suffered from high medical costs and insurance practices.

I hope to share pics and more updates tomorrow morning on the First Lady’s role in this important speech.

9/9/09 – I’m With the Band

I recently read in The Chicago Tribune about a new jazz work inspired by the life of the First Lady. The composition about Mrs. Obama had its world premiere in Chi-Town last Tuesday at the Spertus Institute. It was commissioned by the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

One highlight of this work seems to be when singer Dee Alexander — assuming Michelle Obama’s voice — cried out: “How could I know?” How could Mrs. O have anticipated, in other words, that the man she married would become a symbol to millions?

Fitting that this show would launch in Mrs. Obama’s hometown of Chicago. I wonder how long it will be before other cities begin to follow with similar musical tributes.

9/9/09 – The Arms That Just Won’t Quit…

So, you thought the hoopla over Mrs. Obama’s arms was over? Think again. The latest issue of Women’s Health magazine has an exclusive interview with the First Lady’s long-time personal trainer, Cornell McClellan. He’s claimed to have put Lady O through 1,872 workouts. She started working with McClellan at his Chicago fitness studio, Naturally Fit back in 1997.

“She’s truly committed herself to the importance of health and fitness,” McClellan told Women’s Health. He added, “We take a holistic approach that includes strength, cardiovascular, and flexibility training.”

9/3/09 – Tress Time

In light of the recent TIME magazine article regarding the First Lady’s hair, I checked in with uber hair stylist Tippi Shorter. She has worked with starlets like Alicia Keys and Rihanna. Below are Shorter’s top strand tips for achieving a ‘do like Mrs. Obama’s:

1 – Trims are extremely important for maintaining the sleek lines in a bob cut like the one Mrs. O sports.

2 – The Smart Heat Flatiron from Gold-N-Hot is great because you don’t have to worry about selecting a temperature.

3 – Ojon Daily Intensive Shine Treatment keeps hair shiny and moisturized yet doesn’t weigh it down for ultimate body like Lady O’s tresses.

9/2/09 – Ramadan at the White House

As you guys should know, the majority of the Muslim community is presently observing the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. I would be remiss in not mentioning the White House dinner that the President and First Lady hosted on last night. The affair was held in the State Dining Room and guests reportedly dined on a delicious meal of chicken, peas, potato-leek puree and date and almond-studded salad. For the inside scoop on this dinner, check out this blog post of our Washington Correspondent Cynthia Gordy.
