President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama (3rd L) and their daughters Malia and Sasha arrive to board the Air Force One at the Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on August 23, 2009 en route to Martha’s Vineyard. The First family are on a week-long vacation on the exclusive island of Martha’s Vineyard in Masschusetts.
More digging for rarely before seen pics…I also uncovered this gem on the White House Web site. Here, the President looks at a birthday card with Sasha during a party with his staff in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on August 4. The First Lady and Malia look on from the left. Desiree Rogers is in floral on the right observing with a smile as well.
The First Lady and President during the funeral services for Senator Edward Kennedy on August 29. Former President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush were also in attendance. The services took place at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Roxbury section of Boston.
During the President’s eulogy he called Kennedy “a champion for those who had none; the soul of the Democratic Party.”
I guess we should have all expected this. Those same questions about hair we were asked at sleep-away camp, in college dorm rooms and even in the freakin’ boardroom have now become international topics of conversation since we have a Black First Lady. TIME magazine has an article in its latest issue entitled “Why Michelle’s Hair Matters.” It’s a good read but I doubt you’ll really learn anything from it. Whether or not Mrs. Obama relaxes her hair or blows it out (the verdict is still out), whether or not Malia’s natural twists are “appropriate” (really, people?) and that silly to-do the blogosphere made about the faux haircut Lady O rocked a few weeks back should be examples to all of us that the entire world (including Blacks) are still not totally used to the fact that a Black woman is married to the President.
Good news, folks, we’ve got at least four more years to do so.
The Obama clan continue to relax on their Martha’s Vineyard vacay. (I like that it at least appears other folks are leaving them alone in this pic…) Last night, the family also dined out at the Sweet Life Cafe in Oak Bluffs. Top White House adviser and family friend Valerie Jarrett accompanied them.
Although the President and First Lady are relaxing on vacay in Martha’s Vineyard, they have responded to the death of Senator Ted Kennedy. The White House released the following statement this morning:
“Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy. An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.”
I just learned that Bennett College for Women will be using the book “Go, Tell Michelle:African American Women Write to the New First Lady” (State University of New York Press) as a textbook in the Special Topics: Survey of Women’s Issues Fall Class. This class, taught at the Greensboro, North Carolina HBCU, will be lead by Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson, Ph.D., a Mott Distinguished Professor of Women’s Studies and Director of the Africana Women’s Studies Program at Bennett College for Women. I suspect many other institutions will be adding some type of Michelle Obama course study to their curriculum in the near future.
Another book on the First Lady will be available for our reading pleasure this fall. “Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy” (Center Street) is scheduled debut in late October. The author, Mary Tomer, is the founder of another Web site I happen to fancy, “Mrs. O”. The site carefully chronicles the fashion and style of Lady O and this tome promises to offer more of the same, plus rarely before seen photos of Mrs. Obama, interviews with her favorite designers and more.
Good stuff!
After literally months of anticipation, the Obama family finally arrived at Martha’s Vineyard yesterday! The First Fam is scheduled to spend 10 glorious days in good ole MV.
They landed in style at Cape Cod Coast Guard Station. Mrs. O wore a striped Sophie Theallet dress. This frock was last publicly seen during the Obama’s trip to Ghana. She paired the striped dress with her signature metallic ballet flats.
Were you offended by the shorts Mrs. Obama wore last week at the Grand Canyon? Or, do you think the masses are being too hard on her? Now that some of the dust has settled a bit, I want to know your thoughts. Remember the First Lady tops Vanity Fair’s highly regarded Best Dressed List in their September 2009 issue. What timing…
I’ll leave my personal opinion personal but I’m very curious to see if Mrs. O decides to rock a pair of shorts again this week in the Vineyard. She’s kind of a rebel that way.
Please share your thoughts in the comments section!
Mrs. O recently debuted on the Forbes magazine list of 100 Most Powerful Women at number 40. The list is filled with CEOs and world leaders. Oprah Winfrey, chairman of Harpo Productions and fellow Chi-Town representer, is 41st on the Forbes list, right below the First Lady. Queen Elizabeth, one of the Mrs. Obama’s newest friends across the pond, is 42nd.
The President and First Lady wave at the top of the stairs of Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland earlier today. The entire Obama clan is traveling to Belgrade, Montana where the President will hold a town hall on health insurance reform at Gallatin Field Hangar ER-2 in Belgrade.
Later, the President and First Lady are scheduled to spend the night in Big Sky, Montana.
Yesterday afternoon, the President and First Lady hosted the Presidential Medal of Freedom at The White House in which the Prez awarded 16 individuals for their contributions to the world in the fields of science, culture, peace and social justice. Among those awarded were activist Desmond Tutu, actor Sidney Poitier and civil rights activist Rev. Joseph Lowery.
Mrs. Obama wore a fitted scarlet sheath dress with a coordinating belt. A stack of diamond bangles and patent leather kitten heels finished the look.
Check out Mrs. Obama arriving to the reception for Justice Sonia Sotomayor in the East Room at the White House this morning. Sotomayor was sworn in on August 8 in a public ceremony as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, becoming the first Hispanic justice on the nation’s highest bench.
Our very own Washington Correspondent Cynthia Gordy was up close and personal (along with NY Governor David Paterson, NAACP President Ben Jealous and White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett) for the festivities.

You’ll wish you was there, too!
The First Lady continues to be a force in popular culture. Women’s Wear Daily reported yesterday that despite our grim economy, retailer White House/Black Market was able to boost their advertising budget this fall. The reason? WWD attributes the increase to none other than Mrs. Obama. When she wore their $148 print dress on “The View” last year, women flocked to the store and thus sales rapidly rose. In addition, Vogue magazine saw an increase in sales for their March 2009 issue with the First Lady on the cover while most publications in the Conde Nast family saw a decline in single copy sales.
Have you purchased anything solely based on Mrs. Obama’s attachment to it?
The Martha’s Vineyard Gazette is reporting that the First Family will stay at the Blue Heron Farm for their end-of-summer holiday. The White House has confirmed that the President is scheduled to arrive on August 23. But there are “unofficial” claims that Mrs. Obama, Malia and Sasha will arrive earlier as houseguests of friends.
Some folks in the cyberworld are huffing and puffing about the cost of this trip, especially in light of the economy. Rental amounts have not been disclosed, but similar properties go for $35,000 to $50,000 per week. [It is understood that the Obamas are footing the bill.]
Thoughts?
The First Lady and daughters Sasha and Malia got a private tour of the Betsy Ross House in the heart of Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. Word is Malia recently wrote a paper for school about Ross and wanted to see for herself where America’s most famous seamstress had sewn the flag. I guess that’s a perk of being a First Daughter, huh? The Obama ladies also stopped at Philly landmarks Carpenters Hall and Independence Hall, plus took in a bit of South Street, where they observed artist Isaiah Zagar’s mosaic work.
Mrs. Obama will host the spouses of international leaders at the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh September 24 and 25. Remember when the G-20 gathered in London last April and Mrs. Obama accompanied the President? Well, this time she will play hostess.
I checked in with Semonti Mustaphi in the First Lady’s office and she informed me that an official schedule hasn’t been finalized. But I was able to uncover some info from political journalist Lynn Sweet. Looks like Lady O will preside over a private dinner for spouses at Teresa Heinz Kerry’s Rosemont Farm. Here, she can further promote her healthy eating initiatives. She will take the spouses to meet students at the Creative & Performing Arts School. And she’s also scheduled to host a lunch at The Andy Warhol Museum. Warhol was raised in Pittsburgh.
I’ll keep you posted!
The First Lady is at it again. Word is that the floral frock she wore at the naval base in Norfolk, Virginia last week was from wallet-friendly retailer Talbots and costs a mere $39.99! (Mrs. Obama added her own panache with a vintage brooch.)
Of course this wouldn’t be the first time Mrs. O turned to Talbots for a style fix. She wore another one of their floral creations for our May 2009 cover and wore the same dress again on her way to Moscow last month. Women’s Wear Daily reports that Talbots sold 3,000 of that rose print dress after it appeared on our cover.
Something tells me we’ll see this dress again before summer’s end… Perhaps later this month at Martha’s Vineyard?
Once again, the First Lady has scored a top spot on a coveted “Best Dressed” list. This time it’s for the September 2009 issue of Vanity Fair magazine. Not only did Mrs. Obama land herself on the list but apparently she received more votes than anyone else has…in the history of the publication. WOW! (Mr. President made the list as well.)
An editor from the mag appeared on the TODAY show this morning and said that she felt Lady O has turned the entire planet into her runway without even realizing it. She is being recognized for not only combining high and low designers effortlessly but also for embracing young, American designers.
Good stuff.
President Obama, the First Lady, mother-in-law Marian Robinson and Malia walk to Marine One as they depart the White House on Saturday, August 1. The First Family was headed to Camp David for a weekend visit and a little R&R. (I’m sure Sasha wasn’t far behind.)
At the recent National Design Awards in our nation’s capital, Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa was one of the designers acknowledged for his contribution to design. Read what the Fashion Institute of Technology grad had to say about the First Lady:
“She is very casual in jeans, but also very chic and gorgeous in a gown and I think that is a good blend.” He added that Mrs. Obama has made fashion “more acceptable and less of a pedestal thing.”
Do you agree with Costa? Why or why not?
The First Lady is all smiles as she greets sailors at the Norfolk Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia this afternoon. Mrs. Obama was in town to address the sailors returning from the USS Eisenhower and US Comfort battle group.
Side Bar: Loving the makeup here!
Today, Mrs. Obama will be in Norfolk, Virginia for welcome home ceremonies for the USS Eisenhower carrier strike group and the USNS Comfort hospital ship from their recent deployments. The First Lady will also meet with Navy leaders and their families.
As we know, Mrs. O has made support for military families one of her signature issues. Last week, the Coast Guard invited her to serve as the sponsor for the new Cutter Stratton.
Stay tuned for pics!
Mrs. Obama seems to be laying pretty low today so I thought I’d share this image with you guys from 4th of July weekend. Here, the President and First Lady walk down the steps of the White House to shake hands with guests at a gathering of military families at the White House. The pic was taken right before their big trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana.
Is it me or do they seem like they actually like holding hands?
On Friday, July 24, the President, Mrs. Obama, Gen. James T. Conway, Commandant of the Marine Corps and his wife Annette Conway enter to watch the evening parade at the Marine Corps Barracks in D.C. Apparently this parade has been a summer ritual since 1957.
The First Lady wore a custom Jason Wu linen dress under a lavender cardigan. Doesn’t Mrs. Conway look very excited to see Lady O?
Last night, the President and Mrs. Obama hosted a reception for ambassadors at the White House. Here they are making their grand entrance dressed in black, white and a touch of crimson heading to greet their guests. Word is that the bubbly flowed while the tunes were provided by the Marine String Ensemble.
The First Lady continued her outreach to community health centers by visiting the Caroline Family Practice in Bowling Green, Virginia this afternoon. She also participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to help open this new community health center which was made possible through a $1.3 million Recovery Act fund award. Mrs. Obama will also meet with current and former members of the National Health Service Corps, a program that provides scholarships and loan repayments to clinicians who provide medical, dental, and mental health care in under-served communities.
Look what I just found! I thought I would share this rarely before seen pic of the First Lady meeting with Clio Napolitano, wife of President Napolitano, at the Quirinale Palace in Rome on July 8, 2009. Seems like Mrs. Obama is pretty fond of the yellow hue this summer…
STAY TUNED: Later today I will be posting pics of Lady O visiting community health centers in Bowling, Green, Virgina.
Luncheon attendees dined on crabcakes, carmellini beans; grilled summer squashes and chocolate cake. Here’s a snippet of the speech Mrs. Obama gave at the National Design Awards event at the White House today.
“What I love about design is the artistic and scientific complexity that also becomes useful: a laptop, a bridge, an outfit — (laughter) — a garden, all drawn from a thousand wells of inspiration and yet grounded in the basic principles of math or science. Great designers design with mankind in mind.”
UPDATE: There was a slight mix-up with the White House schedule folks. The design event will be held Friday, July 24th. However, Mrs. Obama did take Malia and Sasha on a sightseeing tour of the popular Luray Caverns this afternoon. Located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, the caverns feature caves with beautiful geological formations.
This is an extra busy week for the First Lady. She is scheduled to host the annual luncheon at the White House this afternoon honoring recipients of the National Design Awards. Prior to the luncheon, the award winners will participate in discussions about their work at Washington D.C.’s Corcoran Gallery of Art, The National Building Museum, The Smithsonian Castle, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the National Museum of the American Indian.
President Obama escorts Mrs. Obama, who dazzled in a Michael Kors number, to begin the music series celebrating country music in the East Room at the White House on Tuesday, July 21. The Country Music Celebration was presented with assistance from The Country Music Association, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and produced by the Grand Ole Opry and Great American Country Television. Music students traveled from across the country to share in this fun event.
The Obama family (including First Grandmother Mrs. Robinson), listen to some good ‘ole tunes from musicians Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss and Union Station during last night’s Country Music Event at the White House.
UPDATE: Lots of folks in the blogosphere are making a fuss about the First Lady’s “new cut.” I don’t think Mrs. Obama permanently shortened her bob but rather opted for a pinned under look. I remember she sported a similar ’do for the TIME 100 event last spring.
What do you guys think?
Later today the First Lady is scheduled to host the second installment of the White House’s music series celebrating the arts and demonstrating the importance of arts education. This afternoon’s event will highlight country music.
120 middle and high school students from across the country will be present to learn about the various genres of country music including bluegrass, honky tonk and rockabilly.
Stay tuned for pics!
The First Lady, President and daughters Malia and Sasha soak in the summer sun while walking on the South Lawn at the White House after leaving the Marine One helicopter yesterday afternoon. The First Family was returning to Washington, D.C. after visiting Camp David.
Mrs. Obama is rocking her fly sporty purple watch again that we saw during her first trip to Europe as First Lady.
I just read an enlightening CNN.com piece about the Friendfield Plantation outside Georgetown, South Carolina. Mrs. Obama’s great-great grandfather, Jim Robinson, was a slave there, CNN reports. About 350 slaves lived there during the 19th century. All that remain on the 3,300 acres are six white-washed shacks.
Jim Robinson was a teenager when slavery was abolished. One can’t help but to think about the irony of Jim Robinson, once a former slave living in a white-washed cabin, having a great-great granddaughter who now lives in an extremely different White House.
Here the Obamas visit the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana where many African slaves were held before they were sent to America, the Caribbean and Europe.
D.C.‘s Washingtonian mag recently dished on one of the First Lady’s favorite scents! The manager of fragrance and cosmetics for the Nordstrom in Pentagon City (a suburb of the District) told the pub that Mrs. O favors Love in White by Creed. The top note of this sophisticated scent is orange zest from southern Spain.
I checked in with the folks at Creed to get their thoughts on Mrs. Obama wearing Love in White and Mr. Creed described Mrs. Obama’s interest in the brand as “an extraordinary honor”. Pretty impressive coming from a company that has been around since 1760.
The President and First Lady watch the fireworks over the National Mall from the White House on July 4, 2009. I’ve been waiting to share this image with you guys! This picture tells such a story, doesn’t it? Sometimes silence can be quite loud.
Are you inspired by Mrs. Obama’s relationship with the President? Why or why not? Sound off…
The First Lady just returned from a whirlwind trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana! Keep clicking for rarely seen photos of her and her family abroad. Plus, find out all about her visits to the Kremlin in Moscow, the Sistine Chapel in Rome and the Cape Coast Castle near Accra.
Mrs. Obama hugs Tatyana Filippova, chief sister of the St. Dimitry Nurse Training College in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday, July 7. Archpriest Arkadiy Shatov, rector of the college, is at left.
Donning a pair of shades, Mrs. O waves as she walks past towering stone columns after a visit of Rome’s ancient Pantheon on Thursday, July 9.
Mrs. Obama looks out from her limousine as she leaves with Malia and Sasha after a visit of Rome’s ancient Pantheon on Thursday, July 9. After her return to Rome from L’Aquila, central Italy, the First Lady and her daughters, took a private 30-minute tour of the Pantheon, the well-preserved ancient Roman monument with massive concrete dome in the heart of Rome.
Mrs. Obama looks up during a visit in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican on Friday, July 10, with a tour guide. She also visited the Vatican Grottos underneath St. Peter’s Basilica on Friday where Pope John Paul II, royal Roman figures and even an emperor have been laid to rest.
President Obama, the First Lady and Sasha and Malia walk past traditional dancers as they participate in a departure ceremony at the airport in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, July 11.
Malia, Mrs. Obama, President Obama and Sasha arrive at the White House from Ghana early Sunday, July 12.
During her brief visit to Ghana, Mrs. Obama shares a warm hug with a local woman as oldest daughter Malia looks on. This emotional departure took place at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the country’s capital, on Saturday, July 11.
President Obama, Mrs. Obama and the First Daughters are given a tour of the historic Cape Coast Castle in Cape Coast, Ghana, on Saturday, July 11. This castle played a significant role during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade as it represented the last African soil many touched before being shipped to America, the Caribbean or Europe.
President Obama and the First Lady visit the La General Hospital in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, July 11. The hospital focuses on prenatal care, HIV testing for pregnant women, improved labor and delivery services, afterbirth care and nutritional counseling. The First Couple met many mothers and babies during their visit.
President Obama, Malia, Sasha and Mrs. Obama exiting Air Force One hand-in-hand upon arrival in Accra, Ghana, this evening. The First Family was welcomed at Kotoka International Airport in the capital Accra by Ghana’s President John Atta-Mills to traditional Ashante drumming, chanting and dancing.
This is sure to be a brief (only 24 hours) but eventful trip.
The Obama family during their last few hours in Rome before boarding Air Force One for the final leg of their international trip.
Next stop…GHANA, WEST AFRICA!
Um, how cool is the First Family in this pic?
The President and First Lady met with Pope Benedict XVI this morning at the Vatican in Rome. (Mrs. Obama joined the men after their initial private meeting.)
Daughters Malia and Sasha joined their parents at the Vatican to meet the Pope as well. What do you guys think of Mrs. O going the traditional route and wearing a short black veil?
The First Lady toured the ‘Palazzo del Governo’ on July 9 in L’Aquila, Italy, along with other G8 spouses. The medieval city was hit by a powerful earthquake in April 2009 that killed 308 people and displaced more than 50,000 residents. She is scheduled to join her husband and daughters for a private visit with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on Friday, July 10.
Fittingly, Mrs. Obama reportedly wears a vintage-inspired beaded brooch from Italian label Moschino at her sweater’s collar.
Mrs. Obama tours more earthquake damage with Sarah Brown, wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, center left, Laureen Harper, wife of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, foreground left, and others on the sidelines of the G8 Summit in L’Aquila, Italy, earlier today.
While President Obama attempts to solve various international crisis, Mrs. O and Malia and Sasha have been taking in the city of Rome to the fullest. Yesterday, the First Daughters made and ate their own blackberry and banana gelato.
Mrs. O and the other first spouses at G8 enjoyed a lunch prepared by chef Heinz Beck, from Rome’s swanky La Pergola restaurant. Beck told Italian TV he especially chose carbonara sauce for the pasta because it is a favorite of Mrs. Obama.
At sunset, Malia and Sasha joined their mother for a private tour of the Colosseum.
The First Couple exits Air Force One hand-in-hand as they arrived at Pratica di Mare military airport on the outskirts of Rome earlier today. The Obama family is scheduled to be in Italy for three days while the President conducts multinational talks about climate change, the global economy and world hunger.
The First Lady and President Obama pose for a photo with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and his wife, Clio Napolitano, at the Quirinale Palace in Rome earlier today. The President will attend the G8 (Group of Eight) summit in L’Aquila from July 8 to July 10 while in Italy.
The First Lady and President Obama wave from the steps of Air Force One before their departure from Moscow, earlier today.
Before departing Russia, the First Family enjoyed an evening at the O2 Lounge, an uber-chic rooftop club at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. The glass-enclosed O2 boasts a panoramic view of Moscow, including Red Square, the Kremlin and is reportedly a place to “see and be seen.”
Next stop…ITALY!
US President Barack Obama (L) and his wife Michelle (2L) participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier in Moscow on July 6, 2009. Obama arrived in Russia for a summit aimed at agreeing a roadmap to nuclear arms cuts and reviving a relationship troubled by a string of crises.
The First Lady visited St. Dmitry Nurse Training College in Moscow earlier today. The students and staff gave the First Lady a warm welcome (check out the chalkboard) and Mrs. O looks humbled in her Jason Wu shift dress.
When asked about Malia and Sasha, Mrs. O replied, “They’re with their grandmother. I think they’re making dolls.”
Mrs. Obama and President Obama strike a pose with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his wife, Svetlana, at the Gorki residence outside Moscow, Russia, on July 6. The political couples were at the Gorki residence for dinner sans Malia and Sasha.
I’m digging Mrs. O’s statement bib Fenton by Dana Lorenz. The necklace is made of crystal, glass and silver.
The First Lady walks hand-in-hand with daughter Sasha while Malia joins hands with her dad prior to departing from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on July 5. The family prepares for the President’s big trip to Moscow, Russia, Italy and Ghana.
Mrs. O is rocking the same floral Talbots dress from our May 2009 cover!
The First Family look on during an event to celebrate Independence Day and to honor military heroes and their families on the South Lawn at the White House on July 4th. The eldest Obama daughter, Malia has to get used to sharing her dad with the rest of the country on her birthday. But, a huge slumber party at Camp David, fireworks and a well-attended White House cookout isn’t such a bad deal.
I read an interesting article by Howard Kurtz in the Washington Post today titled “Black Reporters on the Beat of Michelle Obama.” In it Kurtz begins (or continues) the conversation about whether Black female journalists like Newsweek’s Allison Samuels and the Post’s Robin Givhan can truly be objective in their reporting on the First Lady. And Kurtz also questions whether the Office of the First Lady gives said reporters special treatment because of their race but he quickly points out the answer to the latter appears to be no. Pulitzer Prize-winning Givhan had this to say, “no one noted all the White chicks covering Laura Bush.”
Hmmm.
This picture was taken back on February 2nd in the Oval Office of the White House when the Obama clan had just gotten settled in their new digs. I love the ease and relaxed feel of this image. It’s like no one else is in the room except the First Lady, the President and their girls Malia and Sasha.
Good stuff, no?
New York’s Daily News reported yesterday that when the First Lady visited Paris with Malia and Sasha last month, they were given special access to shop in an upscale boutique when the store would normally be closed. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday that calls were made to open the upscale children’s boutique, Bonpoint, usually closed by law on Sundays. Apparently the Obama ladies arrived in a small group and stayed for about an hour, after the U.S. Embassy arranged for the opening of the shop.
Sarkozy responded to questions about the preferential treatment with this: “Who is going to explain to them why France is the only country where shops are closed on Sundays?”
Good point, President Sarkozy… Good point.
Here’s a snapshot of what Mrs. Obama spoke about during yesterday’s event at D.C.’s Upper Cardozo Health Center.
– 17 million people rely on Community Health Centers every year
– Today’s youth may be on track to a shorter life span than their parents because of the obesity epidemic among young people
– The construction of new clinic space at the Upper Cardozo center will have a domino effect by helping to create jobs in construction and renovation
Do you think the First Lady will be successful in helping to push the President’s health care agenda?
Lady O is scheduled to visit the Unity Health Care Upper Cardoza Community Health Center in Washington D.C. today. Most of the patients there have incomes below the federal poverty level. (Pics will be posted after the event.)
Of the community outreach Mrs. Obama has participated in thus far, which resonates most with you? Is it speaking to young people at “at-risk” schools, planting organic gardens or working with military families? Or, is there some effort that you would like her to participate in that she hasn’t done publicly yet? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
Mrs. Obama visited Unity’s Upper Cardozo Health Center in D.C. today and announced the release of a whooping $851 million in grants to address pressing health center facility and equipment needs and increase access to health care for millions of Americans. The money was made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. More and more Americans join the ranks of the uninsured due to the economic downturn and skyrocketing health costs.

Of the community outreach Mrs. Obama has participated in thus far, which resonates most with you? Or, is there some effort that you would like her to participate in that she hasn’t done publicly yet? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
The First Lady, Malia and Bo walk from the Oval Office to the South Lawn for the White house Luau yesterday evening. The Hawaiian feast was held for members of Congress and their families. The President and Mrs. O hosted this fun gathering.
Are you guys feeling Mrs. Obama’s look in this pic?
For those of you who do not know me, I’m ESSENCE.com editor Bridgette Bartlett here with our Michelle Obama Daily Diary photo blog. I’ll be your insider guide to everything you want to know about Mrs. Obama. Keep clicking for more of her latest happenings.
A timeline of the First Lady’s first 100 days »
Check out the President checking out his wife earlier today during their community service event in Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. The Obamas were helping to assemble an estimated 15,000 backpacks for children of armed service personnel. Apparently daughters Malia and Sasha participated in the giving back too. Mrs. O introduced her husband after giving her own brief remarks (along with a funky little dance) and then the entire first fam worked together to stuff the backpacks with books, juice boxes and healthy snacks.
The First Daughters Malia and Sasha probably think their mother is pretty darn cool right now. The Mom-in-Chief treated her daughters to a Beyonce concert at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., last night. Word is friends from Chicago and staffers from the White House joined the Obama clan as they watched one of their favorite performers on stage in the nation’s capital.
So there were two internationally known Sashas in the house last night. Ha!
Be sure to check out my
today addressing the recent New York magazine article on Blacks in Martha’s Vineyard (the one that quotes a MV regular referring to the First Lady as a “ghetto girl”).Don’t forget to leave me comment here or there with your thoughts on the matter!
The First Lady applauds volunteers while speaking at the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service on June 22 in San Francisco. Mrs. Obama kicked off her husband’s United We Serve campaign urging all Americans to help the nation’s economic recovery through volunteering and public service.
Mrs. O is rocking a silk-blend frock from Rachel Roy (the soon-to-be ex-wife of Damon Dash).
First Lady Michelle Obama and California First Lady Maria Shriver cheer at the dedication of a grade school playground in San Fran. Here’s a snippet of the remarks by Mrs. O at a United We Serve event with Shriver.
“Kids who were never able to play on a swing set get the opportunity to play. Think about the libraries that will be changed because each of us donates a book. Or the smiles that are on some homeless person’s face because you took the time to spend a couple of hours to feed somebody a healthy meal. That’s what United We Serve is all about.”
The First Lady is on the West Coast today. Two Chicago-born first ladies—Mrs. Obama and Maria Shriver, First Lady of California—are scheduled to appear together in San Francisco at a conference to boost volunteerism, a cause both have embraced. At the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service the duo will deliver brief remarks and work on a community playground service project with volunteers at Bret Harte Elementary School in San Francisco.
Mrs. Obama’s Bay area visit leads off a string of nationwide events in which Cabinet members will highlight volunteer projects.

There’s another First Lady book on the shelves, this one covering Mrs. Obama’s trendsetting style. “Michelle Obama: First Lady of Fashion and Style” (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, Inc.)
was penned by veteran style scribe Susan Swimmer. The book features more than 200 photos of Mrs. O and chronicles the Chi-town native’s evolving sense of fashion from her wedding day to her first trip abroad as First Lady.
Love it or hate it, the conversation about Mrs. Obama’s unique spin on style doesn’t appear to have an end in sight.
Read what Hollywood mom-in-chief Jada Pinkett Smith had to say exclusively to ESSENCE.com about Mrs. Obama:
“The sacrifice that Mrs. Obama has made is not only for her husband but for us as a country. People look at Obama and yes, he’s the President, but don’t forget that the woman in every household is the glue. Mrs. Obama keeps the mind, body, spirit and household together of America’s President. It doesn’t mean that Mrs. Obama is falling in the background, but simply standing her ground as many of us strong, secure women have done for years.”
Do you agree with Jada? Leave me a comment with your thoughts.
Remember this iconic citrus ensemble Mrs. Obama wore on January 20, 2009? Well, now you can view the Isabel Toledo design up close and personal at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. The Museum at FIT is showing Isabel Toldeo: Fashion From the Inside Out, which includes this much talked about look, until September 26, 2009.
The First Lady told FIT, “I absolutely adored my Inauguration Day ensemble…and I am happy it will be a part of the exhibit so others can appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship of one of America’s great female designers.”
Mrs. O with some of the 36 fifth grade Bancroft students getting down in the White House kitchen June 16. The First Lady continues her commitment to promoting health and nutrition, particularly to the D.C. youth.
P.S.: I noticed that Mrs. Obama is rocking the same (sold-out) Gap cardigan she wore to lunch with Mrs. Reagan.
Mrs. Obama was certainly busy yesterday. Before harvesting veggies with kids in the the White House garden, she spoke at the District’s Renaissance Hotel for the Greater D.C. Cares event. Here’s a snippet of that speech:
“There’s only so much that government can do. Communities are built and rebuilt by regular people: Folks working in businesses, philanthropists, foundations, and volunteers, all of them coming together to find solutions.”
As mentioned, Mrs. Obama was awarded by the Council of Fashion Designers of America with the Board of Directors’ Special Tribute. White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers was scheduled to accept the award for Mrs. O but neither of the ladies made it to NYC for the star-studded affair.
Mrs. Obama did send a pre-taped acceptance speech via video and thanked the CFDA for the prestigious honor wearing her signature bob, a crisp white shirt and a classic string of pearls. She informed guests that she found fashion “liberating, inspiring and most of all fun.”
Check out a casual and comfy Mrs. Obama walking the White House pup, Bo, on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday, June 14.
Despite her laid-back appearance here, Mrs. Obama was recognized in NYC by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (this is a HUGE deal, folks) just last night for her winning style. Mrs. O wasn’t able to personally accept her award but she sent an equally fabulous rep in her absence. More on this later…
The First Lady, Mrs. Robinson, Malia and Sasha attended a concert at the Jazz Studio held at the East Room of the White House yesterday. The new White House music series featured artists of all ages while 150 local students watched and listened. Mrs. O shared her first moments of jazz with the guests:
“Jazz has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. My mother’s father, who we call “South Side,” had a speaker in every room in his house, and he played it 24 hours a day at—on the highest volume. At Christmas, birthdays, Easter, it didn’t matter, there was jazz playing in our household."
More from Mrs. Obama at yesterday’s jazz event in the East Room of the White House:
“Today’s event exemplifies what I think the White House, the People’s House, should be about. This is a place to honor America’s past, celebrate its present and create its future. What better example of this is—than jazz, America’s indigenous art form? Indeed, jazz is considered by many to be America’s greatest artistic gift to the world.”
The event began with the Jazz Studio but country and classical music events are scheduled to follow at the White House later this year.
Look at Wynton Marsalis getting down on the trumpet! His talented brothers Delfeayo, Jason and Branford, along with dad Ellis Marsalis were also present.
Remember the hoopla a couple months back about Mrs. Obama wearing a sweater to meet the Queen of England and (gasp!) hugging her? Well, all those archaic etiquette rules Mrs. O broke during that meeting apparently didn’t matter to the Queen herself. The two have practically become BFFs! According to some pretty reliable sources, the unlikely pair have exchanged letters and spoken by telephone since that first meeting. Despite their age and background differences, the two women are said to share a number of interests, including the countryside and gardening.
Who woulda thunk it? Are you surprised by this new “friendship”? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
Check out Mrs. O strolling through the lush gardens at 10 Downing Street with the Britain’s Sarah Brown (in red) on June 8th during her recent London visit. I wonder if the two ladies swapped gardening notes…
Later today, the First Lady has big plans for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Mrs. Obama will introduce the White House’s Music Series which will feature artists of all ages including jazz experts Wynton, Branford and Ellis Marsalis.
Prominent South Carolina Republican Rusty DePass killed his Facebook page Sunday, 6.14.09, after being caught likening the First Lady to an escaped gorilla. Yes, you read correctly; the longtime GOP activist posted the crazy comment about a gorilla escaping a zoo in Columbia, S.C., by writing “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors—probably harmless.”
DePass later tried to clean up his statement after the press got wind of it and offered an (ahem) apology. He claimed, “The comment was clearly in jest.”
Really? In 2009? I need you guys to sound off on this. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
Look what I found while snooping around the White House Web site. Pictured here are Suzanne Newton, daughter of head White House florist Nancy Clark, and husband John, showing off their baby girl Grace to the First Lady at Clark’s retirement party on May 22, 2009.
Loving the tangerine get-up and easy-breezy ponytail in this pic. Are you?
Here’s another image I dug up from the White House site. Pictured are the backs of President Obama and French President Sarkozy greeting Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Sarkozy in Caen, France, on June 6, 2009. Remember the Obamas were visiting Caen for a D-Day memorial service honoring WWII heroes.
Some folks made a big stink about these ladies wearing white for a D-Day-related event, citing that it was “disrespectful.” Thoughts?
Check out how Mrs. O towers over French Prez Sarkozy!
I just received an e-mail from the folks at PETA officially announcing that the First Lady does not wear fur. This announcement comes on the heels of fashionable French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy assuring the world that she doesn’t wear fur of any kind. Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Sarkozy hung out together in Paris earlier this week and are often regarded as two of the most fashion-conscious first ladies in history. Guess they might make history for being the most animal-friendly as well.
The Net is all abuzz about the outfit Mrs. Obama wore here while leaving Westminster Abbey in Central London earlier this week. There’s a lot going on: florals, polka dots, lots of color and texture combos. Some folks seem to think it is too much. The verdict is still out on the designer(s) of this ensemble but the belt is reportedly by Sonia Rykiel.
I’ll keep my opinion to myself but I will say that I love the unexpected sporty purple watch!
What do you guys think of Mrs. Obama’s look?
Don’t think we have lost it here at ESSENCE.com! I simply wanted to include this picture today to demonstrate the extreme lengths those relentless paps will go through in order to snap a pic, especially of Mrs. Obama. London is notorious for having some of the world’s most zealous tabloids, so pics like these can be the norm across the pond. I guess the Obama ladies survived though…
Here is Mrs. O leaving the London Harry Potter films set with Malia and Sasha (not pictured).
Today is the 8th birthday of the youngest member of the Obama clan, Sasha. I just learned that Mrs. Obama treated the birthday girl and her big sis Malia to a viewing of The Lion King while in London yesterday. The First Ladies of the White House reportedly sat in a private box at the Lyceum Theater in London’s West End.
Good times!
We should have known that Mrs. Obama had something up her sleeve when we learned she and the girls planned to stay “an extra day in Paris” after the President headed home. The First Lady pulled a fast one on everybody and made a whirlwind visit to London yesterday with Malia and Sasha.
Here, she leaves the House of Commons in a motorcade during her unofficial U.K. visit on June 8.
The Obama ladies made the most of their brief stay in London. Reportedly, the First Lady and daughters met with Sarah Brown, wife to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, at 10 Downing Street. They also checked out Big Ben, the set of the Harry Potter films at Pinewood Studios (apparently Malia is an avid Potter series reader) and ducked into a traditional English pub where Malia and Sasha ate fish and chips and Mrs. Obama opted for steak.
What a memorable experience for any mother to share with her children, right?
While their hubbys met for serious political talk, Mrs. Obama and the First Lady of France Carla Bruni Sarkozy spent a little time together in Caen, France, on June 6. Mrs. Sarkozy is thought of as a style icon in France so I’m always interested to see these two ladies together. Funny that they’re both wearing white (or cream) belted frocks, right?
The First Lady, along with daughters Malia and Sasha, visited Pompidou Centre Modern Art Museum in Paris on June 7. The President was due to fly back to D.C. yesterday, but the rest of the clan stayed on in Paris for a short private visit. On Saturday night the Obamas were cheered by huge crowds as they visited Notre Dame Cathedral. They then went on to dine privately in a traditional French bistro.
The ladies of the White House have arrived in Paris! The First Lady took Malia, 10 and Sasha, 7 up to the Eiffel Tower for a birds-eye view of Paris at sunset on Friday.
Hundreds of onlookers screamed “Michelle” as she stepped out of a vehicle to wave to the crowd before leading the girls into the tower through a discreet side entrance.
Make no mistake about it, the Obama’s ties to Chicago are tight. The First Lady’s camp just announced that Mrs. Obama’s former Chief of Staff Jackie Norris is stepping down to become senior adviser to the Corporation for National and Community Service. In her place will be Chi-Town’s Susan Sher, a longtime buddy of the First Lady who has been promoted as her new chief of staff. Sher has already worked in both the East and West Wings of the White House. She also worked with Mrs. O at the City of Chicago and later at the University of Chicago.
Word is the President will meet Mrs. Obama, Malia and Sasha in Paris this weekend for a little foreign family fun. This will be the first trip abroad for the girls since they moved into the White House in January.
Mrs. Obama will have one public event in Normandy, France, on Saturday, but the rest of the family getaway will be private, per White House officials. In her commencement address yesterday, the First Lady encouraged grads to travel the world and learn multiple languages. In fact, she admitted that not learning more than one language was a regret of hers and the President. Looks like she doesn’t want that to happen to her own daughters.
Loves it! Au revoir~
Yesterday, funny gal Niecy Nash stopped by the office to show some love to the ESSENCE team. The comedic actress was in town for the Gracie Awards and left quite a few pearls of wisdom with the staff. She also shared her thoughts on the First Lady:
“Michelle Obama has made being smart and educated sexy. We are inundated with images of what society says is sexy. That video girl look was sexy. Now, men are saying ’I gotta get me a Michelle Obama! [They realize] it is going to take more than a bra shirt and booty shorts to truly keep them happy.”
Here’s a pic from the lunch that I was talking about. The current First Lady, Mrs. Obama broke bread with former First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House this afternoon.
Mrs. Obama’s snazzy twinset is presently on sale at the Gap. The striped shell is $9.99 and the floral cardigan is $24.99. Take that, Republicans!
Mrs. Obama gave the commencement address earlier today for the graduating class of the Washington Math Science Technical High School in D.C. The graduation took place at the Cramton Auditorium of Howard University. Established in 1998, the school’s mission is to provide a rigorous education, integrating mathematics and science instruction with technology. The school has a graduation rate of 99% this year, with all accepted to two- or four-year institutions. The First Lady accepted the invitation to speak after receiving a letter written by Jasmine Williams, one of this year’s 98 graduates.
Go Jasmine!
As usual, Mrs. Obama left the students with some food that will really stick to their ribs, as my mother would say. Here’s a bit of her speech from the graduation:
“I’m here today to tell you that with common sense, hard work, confidence and faith, you can achieve anything you set your minds to. For those of you who may be doubting and questioning yourselves, I know how you feel. But in the end, we are all more than ready. It helps that [you] are graduating from this outstanding school. A school that believes that all students should be able to succeed and held to the highest standards; and proves that African-American and Latino students can excel in math and science. So, get to work, and congratulations.”
Our Washington Correspondent Cynthia Gordy just gave me a tip that Mrs. Obama and former First Lady Nancy Reagan are scheduled to have lunch together tomorrow, June 3! Mrs. Reagan is reportedly in the District for a ceremony marking the Ronald Reagan centennial.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that lunch…
I found more cool pics of the First Couple out and about. President Obama and the First Lady as they walk toward Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House on May 30 in Washington, D.C. The Obamas were traveling to New York City for their date night.
This is such a pretty picture. I think it will become iconic. By the way, check out the muscles in Mrs. Obama’s back!
Here are those D.C. Bancroft Elementary students again in one of the gardens on the school grounds.
“It’s not just about being out in the garden, being out in the open air, or being at the White House. They’ve really learned some lessons about nutrition. They’re making different choices because they’re a part of the process of planting and tilling the soil and pulling up the food. It makes such a huge difference in the choices that they make.”
The President and First Lady depart JFK airport in New York early Sunday, May 31, following their Saturday date night in Manhattan for a private dinner at Blue Hill restaurant in Greenwich Village and a Broadway play. They saw a performance of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone”, the August Wilson drama that chronicles the struggles of African-Americans in the early 20th century.
And I’m really digging Mrs. Obama’s blue clutch with her all-black ensemble. Always love an unexpected pop of color!
Many (mainly Republicans) are criticizing the Obamas for their night on the town while most taxpayers are struggling financially. What’s your take?
The First Couple offers their applause after the Broadway show during Saturday night’s date. The President explained why he took Mrs. Obama out last weekend in a statement via one of his aides.
“I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished.”
Ladies, isn’t this awesome?
A candid shot of the Obamas in the Belasco Theatre during their date night this past Saturday. I have yet to see August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” but I always enjoy an August Wilson (RIP) play and plan to see it very soon. I’m pretty sure lots of other folks will be checking out this production now too…
Mrs. Obama spent her afternoon with local D.C. kids again. This time she headed to Bancroft Elementary School in the District. She was there to help plant some veggies. The school has long cultivated an organic garden and students from Bancroft helped the First Lady plant the White House’s garden earlier this year. Here’s a snippet of her speech:
“Encouraging people to use farmer’s markets and community gardens is really critical. But we have to figure out how to make this more affordable.”
“So let’s go out and do some more planting!”
So, once again I went snooping on the White House Web site and once again I found some great, rarely before seen shots of the First Lady. Here’s the first one:
Mrs. Obama looking over her speech before speaking at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, on May 18. I was at the Met for the American Wing reopening that day and Mrs. Obama delivered her speech effortlessly. It’s kinda cool to see what was actually going on behind the scenes.
Is it me or does it look like Mrs. Obama is praying and an angelic light is shining down on her from the heavens? Wow!
In this photo, the First Lady prepares to speak at a meeting of the Corporation for National and Community Service at the Department of Commerce in D.C., May 20.
Actually, she just might have been praying (we’ll probably never know)…
My last pic (for now) from the White House Web site. This T-shirt commemorates Mrs. Obama’s address to the first graduating class at the University of California Merced, on May 16.
While the shirt itself looks much like most of the other Obamatized clothing one can purchase in anywhere, USA, the historical significance of it makes the picture kinda cool. Don’t you agree?
Yesterday, an official announcement was made about the President and Mrs. Obama hosting the ninth National Book Festival in D.C. Apparently this daylong event on the National Mall celebrates the joys of reading and literacy and is scheduled for Saturday, September 26. The festival is free and open to the public and was started by former First Lady Laura Bush in 2001.
Happy reading!
For all those folks comparing Mrs. Obama to former First Ladies (Jackie O anyone?), check out what Carl Sferrazza Anthony, historian at the National First Ladies Library in Ohio, had to say recently to Women’s Wear Daily:
“I think maybe some mornings Mrs. Obama says, ‘Well, I have to do a school event at 11, a luncheon at 12, and leave early to tape a public service announcement, and it’s hot out.”
“At the same time there is a really highly conscientious effort to be aware that what [she] wears will help define the administration and help serve as a symbol for the administration. Mrs. Obama has struck the right balance.”
Earlier this year I interviewed Ingrid Grimes-Myles, makeup artist to Mrs. Obama. The beauty industry vet shared her tips on how the First Lady’s look can be recreated on a budget.
Keep It Simple
“You shouldn’t have to worry about your makeup from sunup to sundown. Just powder your face and touch up your lip.”
Blush Basics
“It looks unnatural to have big red or pink cheeks. I tend to go for a very minimalist look on blush.”
Frugual Finds
“You don’t have to spend a lot on beauty. Go into a drugstore and look for a simple cleanser and a very good moisturizer that doesn’t have a lot of additives.”
Mrs. Obama (wearing a cheery floral cardigan) is accompanied by the President as they dash off to Camp David for the holiday weekend. The First Couple left Saturday, May 23, for the presidential retreat in Maryland. Here they are exiting the White House walking toward Marine One hand-in-hand. Mrs. Obama rocked an effortless ponytail and shades and kept the entire look summer-ready.
Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
Fashion industry bible Women’s Wear Daily published an article on Mrs. Obama’s influence on the retail side of the biz earlier this week. Enlightening piece. It seems women are interested in what the First Lady wears but her huge influence might not necessarily trickle down to the cash register.
Sophia Theallet, whose dress the First Lady wears in this pic, said that the $1,295 style sold out everywhere. However, fellow designer Maria Cornejo reveals that she doesn’t count success by the number of pieces sold. She told WWD that the last thing women who come into her store want is to buy something because it’s been photographed a lot.
Actress Anika Noni Rose stopped by ESSENCE yesterday to chat and give some staffers a sneak preview at her upcoming Disney flick “The Princess and the Frog.” I did my usual and got her thoughts on the First Lady. Here’s what she said:
“This is a small thing, but it is brilliant. The organic garden [that Mrs. Obama planted] is a wonderful thing. The issue of childhood obesity and diabetes in this country is out of control and if we start introducing real food to our babies then they’ll love real food. That excites me about her.”
How sick is this image? It and more can be found in the latest issue of Time magazine, officially on newsstands tomorrow, May 22. Here’s a snippet of what appears to be a pretty interesting cover story:
The great-great-granddaughter of slaves now occupies a house built by them, one of the most professionally accomplished First Ladies ever cheerfully chooses to call herself Mom in Chief.
“I tried not to come into this with too many expectations one way or the other,” she says on a sunny May afternoon in her East Wing office. “I felt like part of my job—and I still feel like that—is to be open to where this needs to go.”
Here’s the cover (how many is this now?) of that brand new Time mag I just mentioned. In this article, Mrs. Obama discusses how she never planned on becoming the First Lady but what she intends to do now that she’s at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
“I’m not supposed to be here,” she says again and again. And ever since she arrived, she has been asking, “What are the things that we can do differently here, the things that have never been done, the people who’ve never seen or experienced this White House?”
I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried. Look at the latest “Obamatized” item to make its way to my desk…“The Barack and Michelle Obama Paper Doll & Cut-Out Book” (St. Martin’s Press). There are over 30 mix-and-match coordinated outfits (and accessories!) featuring the First Couple in this baby. Written by John Boswell and illustrated by Randy Jones and Susann Ferris-Jones, this book is probably more fun for adults than kids.
For those of you who just can’t seem to get enough of the Obamas, this book will be available in June for ten bucks.
All together now: AWWWW!
Sure, I’m a hopeless romantic, but even the most cynical sister has to be just a little touched by this photo. The White House released this and other rarely seen images on their official site recently and I wanted to share with you guys here in the Daily Diary.
President Obama whispers into the First Lady’s ear during the White House Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 4. Keep clicking for more great shots!
President Obama, holding a tortilla from the buffet table at the White House Cinco de Mayo celebration, offers a sly grin to his wife as enter the elevator to their private residence following the event on May 4.
What do you think of the First Lady’s citrus frock?
Another great shot. President Obama and the First Lady were welcomed by students at the Seed School in Washington, D.C., after the signing of the Kennedy Service Act for National Service April 21. The Seed School in Southeast D.C. has offered an intensive academic and boarding education to area 7-12 grade students since 1998.
The expression of the young lady in the crowd wearing the light blue shirt with her hand over her mouth? Priceless.
A few hours following her ribbon cutting at the MET, the First Lady was at Lincoln Center for the 69th Spring Gala of the American Ballet Theater. I attended and noticed that even serious ballet enthusiasts were excited to hear Mrs. Obama’s remarks at the beginning of the show. Guests included Susan Fales-Hill, Lynn Whitfield, Al Roker and wife Deborah Roberts and (insert drumroll here) Iman. Hmmm… Oh and Herbie Hancock brought the house down with his special piano performance.
Here, Mrs. Obama delivers her short but sweet speech in a chic Azzedine Alaia number after being introduced by Caroline Kennedy.
I had the pleasure of attending the official Re-Opening of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier today. Mrs. Obama cut the ribbon during the ceremonies that were attended by trustees of the museum, NYC Mayor Bloomberg and tastemakers like fashion designer Ralph Lauren and model Iman. (The First Lady even graciously hugged and kissed Iman after her speech. Hmmm…)
Mrs. Obama dazzled in a purple Isaac Mizrahi ensemble. With her are left to right, Emily K. Rafferty, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and NY Congress reps Carolyn Maloney and Charles Rangel.
An added treat of the festivities was seeing students from various NYC public schools gathered for the event in the midst of folks like NYC socialite Aerin Lauder and Vogue editrix Anna Wintour. Rumor is that the approximately 50 students, from neighborhoods including Harlem and Cambria Heights (Queens), had no idea they were going to hear the First Lady speak today. Talk about a great unexpected class trip!
Mrs. Obama stressed that she and the President want to ensure children from all walks of life are exposed to the arts; from fashion design to poetry. She spent a lot of time talking to students and posing for pics even after some guests began to leave.
I was torn on whether I should post something regarding model turned mogul Iman’s comments about the First Lady but I finally decided that I had to. Read a snippet below:
“Mrs. Obama is not a great beauty. But she is so interesting looking and so bright. That will always take you further. When you’re a great beauty, it’s always downhill for you. If you’re someone like Mrs. Obama, you just get better with age.”
Huh? I have my own thoughts about Mrs. Bowie’s above quote in Parade magazine but I am really curious to know what you guys think. Do share.
Although her husband got mixed reviews at Notre Dame, the First Lady was a winner on May 16 at University of California-Merced. Mrs. Obama delivered her first commencement speech as First Lady at the university after students wrote countless letters and persistently rallied for her to the school’s administration. The 500 graduating students receiving diplomas are the first graduating class since the university opened in 2005.
The First Lady was instructed by her staff that she had to speak to the tenacious students at Merced. Mrs. Obama explained:
“My office received thousands of letters and Valentines cards from students; each and every one of them so filled with hope and enthusiasm. It moved not just me but my entire staff. They came up to me and said, ‘Michelle, you have to do this.’ (Laughter.) ‘You have to go here!’”
Mrs. Obama made a point of acknowledging green leader Van Jones, Harlem education innovator Geoffrey Canada and Teach for America founder Wendy Kopp while delivering remarks at Merced. Here’s a bit of the First Lady’s speech to the graduates:
“Make your legacy a lasting one. Dream big, think broadly about your life, and please make giving back to your community a part of that vision. Take the same hope and optimism, the hard work and tenacity that brought you to this point, and carry that with you for the rest of your life.”
Remember when I first mentioned the Michelle Obama comic book that was released in time for the President’s first 100 days in office? Well, the sales were so successful that the publisher had to produce a second edition! The Michelle Obama comic sold out from the distributor two days before it was released. Crazy, right?
So, I snagged an exclusive cover image for the second printing of this popular comic book. It isn’t on-sale until June but I wanted you to have a sneak peek. What do you guys think? Two more political biographies, featuring Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, are in production and scheduled for release in the coming months. This Michelle Obama version retails for $4, amazon.com.
I thought I had seen it all but when these puppies (excuse the pun) landed on my desk I knew I had to share. The First Dog, Bo and pups all over the world can soon munch on these “Obamatized” tasty treats made of healthy ingredients like salmon, potato and roast beef. YesWeCan Dog Treats were formed as a direct result to the President’s request that we “all do our part”. That’s why 25% of the proceeds from these treats go to animal rescue foundations.

Dancehall king Sean Paul stopped by the ESSENCE offices yesterday and shared a bit of his thoughts on First Lady Michelle Obama:
“I think she’s very strong. You’re going to be criticized as the First Lady regardless, but when you’re the first Black First Lady…it is a lot to go through. The Obamas prove that you can come from any class or race and end up leading the country. Having them both in the White House speaks volumes about the times in which we are living—we’ve come a long way.”
Hey there! Be sure to check out insider tips and tricks from top fitness and nutrition experts in our Get Michelle Obama’s Body gallery. It is chock full of helpful nuggets on staying trim and fit just like the First Lady.
You’re welcome.
Mrs. Obama is at it again. On May 13 she stopped by the Ferebee-Hope Community School in Southeast Washington, D.C. Here, Mrs. Obama, in a purple polka dot Lanvin frock, gives third grade students at Ferebee-Hope some midweek inspiration while teacher Andrea Jacob looks on with a smile. I see such potential in these little faces. Something tells me Mrs. Obama does too.
Is it me or do kids seem to gravitate to the First Lady? And I’m still wondering how many former first ladies made their way to Southeast…
While at the school, Mrs. Obama read “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” by Judith Viorst to the third grade class. She later shared a story with them about being the First Lady.
“I spend a lot of time thinking about my girls and how to make their life better, and how to make your lives better, because when I come here and I see you guys, I think of my girls. I read to them just like I’m reading to you. I want you all to be good readers, and to love learning and books, because it just makes life easier for you. And that’s the best part of my day.”
The First Lady and the President arrive in style for an evening of poetry, music, and spoken word. Check out Mrs. Obama’s funky top! The festivities went down in the East Room of the White House on the evening of May 12.
Really people, aren’t the current activities in the White House under the Obama administration refreshing? Also, are you feeling Mrs. Obama’s look here or do you think it is too casual?
Mrs. Obama commands the mike at the White House Poetry Jam on May 12. The First Lady’s colorful off the shoulder blouse exudes a quiet sex appeal. I wonder what the political pundits and fashion critics will have to say about this…
UPDATE: Mrs. Obama’s funky blouse is by Brazilian/British duo Basso & Brooke.
White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers awaits the arrival of the First Lady and President Obama for an exciting evening of poetry and jazz in the East Room on May 12. This Poetry Jam is the latest of a plethora of cultural events Rogers will plan for the Obamas.
Rogers made sure that the Obamas were showcasing the best of the best at their White House Poetry Jam. Esperanza Spalding, 24, is a 2005 recipient of the Boston Jazz Society scholarship for outstanding musicianship. Spalding was just one of the talented guests that performed for the First Lady and President Obama during the special evening of spoken word and jazz.
The Obamas have had performances by Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and now a Poetry Jam at the White House at just over 100 days of the President being in office. Who do you think is next to perform at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?
The Maxim magazine Hot 100 were just announced and guess who joined the ranks of bootylicious Beyonce, gorgeous Gabby (Gabrielle Union) and racy Rihanna this year? Well, none other than our First Lady! Mrs. Obama made #93 on the popular list, becoming the first First Lady to make the mag’s coveted roundup.
Being on this list is probably a huge honor for most models, actresses and musicians but for a First Lady? Hmmm…But if you’re hot, you’re hot, right?
What do you guys think about Mrs. Obama’s inclusion on this year’s Maxim Hot 100 list?
The Obamas are bringing a little of the Chi (think Love Jones) to the District! The President and First Lady are hosting an evening of poetry, music and spoken word at the White House for a “Poetry Jam”. Scheduled to perform are Emmy winner James Earl Jones, jazz musician and singer Esperanza Spalding and jazz pianist Eric Lewis. (I saw Lewis perform last year and his playing is nothing short of riveting.)
The event will be streamed live on www.whitehouse.gov.
How cool is that?!
Are you doing what you went to school for? Well, Mrs. Obama isn’t and she’s quite proud of it. The First Lady spoke to employees of the Community for National and Community Service on May 12. While this engagement joins a long list of those for the First Lady in her continued outreach to the D.C. community, Mrs. Obama made it known that the CNCS is dear to her heart.
Speaking to about 200 employees, the Southside Chicago native said that when she was a college student, she had to work during the summer and felt she couldn’t ask her working class parents to let her volunteer or do internships.
While delivering her remarks the First Lady revealed how after law school and joining a corporate firm, she lost her father and a friend about her age died of cancer. Mrs. Obama realized that working for a corporate law firm wasn’t what she wanted her legacy to be.
Public service “is an opportunity to put your faith into action,” the First Lady said wearing a chic black ensemble with a matching bolero. Mrs. Obama also joked that she could have been a “rich lawyer” who just wrote checks to the Obama campaign. Instead, public service has “shaped my life,” she said.
It just gets better and better. The President and the First Lady went on a date Saturday (May 2) night. The pair were casually dressed: Mr. Obama in a navy suit and button-up sans tie and the Mrs. wearing a white shirt, black capri pants and black strappy sandals. She had her usually bobbed tresses pulled back into a ponytail. The duo dined at Washington’s stylish Citronelle restaurant located in the hip Georgetown area of the District.
Work hard. Play hard. Mrs. Obama, women around the globe are cheering and hoping that their beaus take note.
Just read that the CFDA Fashion Awards is honoring the First Lady with the Board of Director’s Special Tribute on June 15 but Mrs. Obama will not be in NYC to accept her award. Women’s Wear Daily does report however that the First Lady will tape her acceptance speech at the White House which will be shown during the awards ceremony. Social Secretary Desiree Rogers (pictured here with the Prez) is scheduled to accept the award on Mrs. Obama’s behalf.
Until cloning is an option, the First Lady can’t possibly make all the big events she is invited to attend. It sure does help to have an equally fabulous stand-in, right?
Everyone is still buzzing about the Correspondents’ dinner that shut D.C. down on May 9. Several of my coworkers attended the star studded affair and they say we should all believe the hype.
Also still getting buzz is Mrs. Obama’s Michael Kors fuchsia frock. (She wore Kors at the Time 100 gala too.) Read what the designer had to say about the First Lady: “I am honored that she choose to wear my clothes to two events in the same week and looked so chic at both occasions,” said Kors to Women’s Wear Daily.
Here, the First Lady holds down the head table with other honored guests.
There’s an awful lot of “buzz” circulating about the Obamas vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard this summer. I checked in with Roger Schilling, owner of C’est La Vie in Oak Bluffs, a historically African-American area of MV. Schilling is all but certain the Obamas are indeed vacationing in the popular area the last two weeks in August.
“We’re very excited. It will be a zoo; I am so psyched. It will be good for the economy of the island.” The 23-year resident of the Vineyard added with a laugh, “Everyone is gonna try to have a party and get a hold of Barack and Michelle. The President has been here before and a lot of people in his circle vacation here.”
The First Lady glows wearing a fuchsia sheath dress from Michael Kors on Saturday night (May 9) at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. The annual event, held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, was hosted by actress Wanda Sykes (who provided some controversial comic relief). Activist Al Sharpton and musician Alicia Keys were just a couple of the A-listers also in attendance.
Mrs. Obama, wearing another fierce statement-making necklace, helped to award scholarships to deserving journalism students. Proceeds from this year’s event will also go to feeding the nation’s hungry.
The First Lady held it down on the evening of May 9 at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. The Washington Hilton Hotel was bursting with celebs—some who apparently could barely believe how “exciting” the event was—yet Mrs. Obama was her usual calm and collected self.
While guests such as Kerry Washington, Tyra Banks and Barbara Walters enjoyed the evening’s festivities, the First Lady and Associated Press President and CEO Tom Curley made a toast.
Some people are calling Washington, D.C., the new Hollywood. Do you agree? If so, do you think the First Lady is a large reason why?
There were smiles all around at the Correspondents’ Association dinner on May 9. Here, President Obama shakes
hands with White House Correspondents’ Association Secretary Peter Maer of CBS News as the First Lady chats it up with Wanda Sykes during the celeb-filled affair.
Good times!
The President and First Lady took time from their busy schedules to attend their daughter Malia’s parent-teacher meeting on Friday, May 8. Here, they are photographed returning from the meeting. Malia, 10, attends the Washington campus of the prestigious Sidwell Friends School.
Do you think Malia’s teachers felt any pressure?
While the President and VP Biden got their grub on at D.C.‘s Ray’s Hell Burger earlier this week, the First Lady and her staff dined at the District’s burger joint Good Stuff Eatery for lunch Friday, May 8. Reportedly Mrs. Obama and her team sat on the second floor of the eatery and sampled everything from the popular “Prez Obama” burger to french fries dusted with thyme, rosemary and cracked pepper.
My sources say that during this burger feast the group was celebrating the big news of one of the First Lady’s top aides. Apparently wedding bells will soon be ringing!
Guess we can expect a BBQ or two at the White House this summer?
Even before November 4, 2008, the admiration for Mrs. Obama from folks of all walks of life was nothing short of remarkable. “Go, Tell Michelle” (State University of New York Press), compiled and edited by Barbara A. Seals Nevergold and Peggy Brooks-Bertram, allows one to get an up-close look at some of the women who have been personally touched by the First Lady. The book includes heartfelt letters and poems from teachers to politicians sharing hopes, fears and even advice with the First Lady.
Originally published in late January, shortly after the inauguration, this book will make an excellent Mother’s Day gift for the mom in your life who is interested in all things Mrs. Obama.
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10. (Have you completed your shopping?) Of course this will be Mrs. Obama’s first Mother’s Day in the White House as First Lady and Mrs. Robinson’s first Mother’s Day as First Grandmother. Last week while discussing the Daily Diary during an online chat in our community, (please join if you haven’t already) members speculated on what gifts will be exchanged at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue this year. Everything from flowers to purses were mentioned.
Tell me, what do you think Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Robinson will receive from the President, Malia and Sasha on Sunday?
The First Lady spoke this morning (May 7) at the annual meeting of Corporate Voices for Working Families. (She even arrived a little early.) At D.C.’s Mayflower Hotel, Mrs. Obama discussed on-site child care, flexible work hours and paid leave among the issues that need to be addressed for working families. She told the story of growing up the daughter of a city sanitation worker and stay-at-home mom and her efforts to balance work and family responsibilities.
“These types of policies can be the key to whether a family remains economically viable or slips into financial uncertainty,” advised Mrs. Obama who wore a floral-patterned blouse with a wide brown studded belt and black pants.
The First Lady shares quality time with Jeanette D. Rivera Boria, who spoke about working while caring for her sick mother at the Corporate Voices for Working Families on May 7.
Mrs. Obama was honest about the resources she now has that most working mothers do not. Everyone should have the chief of staff, scheduler and assistant she has at her disposal noted Mrs. Obama. She also remarked that in her experience employers benefit when they give their employees flexibility with family demands.
“The more flexibility and opportunity that I gave them to be good parents, the more commitment they made to working with me.”
The First Lady spoke on the morning of May 5 at the annual meeting of Corporate Voices for Working Families. (She even arrived a little early.) In addition to the First Lady’s stop at the U.N. and the Time 100 gala, she managed to find time to go to Sesame Street. She visited the set of the popular kids show in NYC on May 5 to tape a public service announcement on healthy eating. Apparently Mrs. Obama had a very good time hanging out with Elmo. She revealed, “It’s probably the best thing I’ve done so far in the White House.”
I put a call into a friend of a friend over at Sesame Street in an attempt to give you guys the scoop on when this show will actually air. Stay tuned!
Doesn’t Mrs. Obama’s green cardigan bare a strong resemblance to the one she wore on the ESSENCE May 2009 cover?
Check out what R&B diva Ciara had to say exclusively to the Daily Diary about Mrs. Obama:
“I believe that when a woman goes out in front of the world she is a reflection of her man. I truly admire First Lady Michelle Obama because she is every bit of the backbone of her family and household and is just as strong and powerful as her husband.”
It’s always interesting to hear what celebs—who are used to folks fawning over them—think of the First Family. Do you agree with Ms. Ciara? Leave me a comment and tell me why (or why not).

Mrs. Obama had a busy Cinco de Mayo in the Big Apple! First, she spoke at the United Nations where U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice revealed to her, "We love your style, your warmth, your brilliance.”
Then she headed over to Lincoln Center where she delivered special remarks as one of the honorees at TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala. Mrs. Obama, who was seated at a table with Oprah and BFF Gayle King, kicked the evening off by saluting those ordinary people across the country who dedicate their lives to community service. Tears began to form in her eyes when she spoke about her own influences.
“I stand here today because of people who loved me, and pushed me and believed in me."
Chi-town buddies Oprah Winfrey and the First Lady had a chance to catch up in NYC on the evening of May 5 at Time’s 100 Most Influential gala. I was there and trust me, all eyes were on their table! Both honorees were dressed in sophisticated dark (Mrs. Obama in Michael Kors) gowns with statement-making necklaces and both had their hair pulled back. Great minds think alike? Oprah and the First Lady made a point to recognize and commend great teachers during their remarks.
Mrs. Obama, who had to ask guests to sit and cease their standing ovation so she could begin her speech, noted, “Our success was made possible with the encouragement of a diligent parent or teacher, a grandparent who told us we had real talent."
Everyone is buzzing about Mrs. Obama’s refreshing approach to fashion, particularly that she repeats many of her stylish looks. Yesterday, May 5, she wore the same Tracy Feith frock to the U.N. (right) that she wore to the National Prayer Service following the inauguration in January (left). During a panel discussion I attended on May 3 about the First Lady’s style, designer Narcisco Rodriguez embraced Mrs. Obama’s fearless approach to dressing.
“I admire her for wearing things more than once. I think that’s supercool,” shared Rodriguez, who has designed some of Mrs. Obama’s most notable looks including her Election Night dress.
The President and First Lady participated in a festive Cinco de Mayo event in their home on the evening of May 4. The President joked that the “Obama White House” likes to get things started early.
Mrs. Obama looked stunning in her citrus green delicately beaded dress. Doesn’t it just say spring is here? The First Lady is scheduled to be in NYC the evening of May 5 for the big TIME 100 event so I imagine that might be why she and the President decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo a little early.
Hola! Mrs. Obama was hanging out with the kids again. On Tuesday, May 4 during an early celebration for Cinco De Mayo, the First Lady attended the Latin American Montessori Bilingual (LAMB) Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. A few girls with pretty flowers in their hair steal hugs from Mrs. Obama after their performance. The students were able to ask Mrs. Obama questions at the end of the event as well.
Side Note: I happened to be on the phone with a J.Crew rep just a few minutes ago and she confirmed that the sweater the First Lady has on in this pic is the same style (in lavender) that she wore (in yellow) last week (April 29) at the food bank.
It just gets better and better. The President and the First Lady went on a date Saturday (May 2) night. The pair were casually dressed: Mr. Obama in a navy suit and button-up sans tie and the Mrs. wearing a white shirt, black capri pants and black strappy sandals. She had her usually bobbed tresses pulled back into a sleek ponytail. The duo dined at Washington’s stylish Citronelle restaurant located in the hip Georgetown area of the District.
Work hard. Play hard. Mrs. Obama, women around the globe are cheering and hoping that their beaus take note.
The White House recently released this and other rarely seen pictures of the President, the Fist Lady and some key members of the staff in conjunction with Obama’s first 100 days in office. The images are awesome. In this one (which I LOVE!), Mrs. Obama waits patiently as her husband signs the guestbook upon their arrival at the Prague Castle on April 5.
Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words…
Here’s another cool photo from those recently released White House pics. Here, the First Couple prepares for the National Newspaper Publishers Association reception on March 20. Can’t you feel the love? Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett looks on with a smile.
Well, I don’t know what the front of this dress (reportedly from designer Peter Soronen) looks like but the back sure is pretty! The President and Mrs. Obama were making a grand entrance at the Annual Alfalfa Dinner at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., on January 31.
As I type, Mrs. Obama and Vice-President Biden are volunteering at the Capital Area Food Bank in D.C. along with 160 Congressional spouses and children for the “Food for Kids” program. More info to come!
Mrs. Obama received a big honor from the Congressional Club on April 30. (There’s more info on it if you keep clicking…) Check out a snippet from her speech during the luncheon:
“I’ve been able to turn my attention to some issues I care about: Supporting military families, work-life balance, healthy eating, planting that wonderful garden—we had our first salad out of the garden we’re producing—and one of my greatest passions—national and community service.”
Remember the big honor I mentioned Mrs. Obama received from the Congressional Club? Check out a snippet from her speech during the luncheon:
“I’ve been able to turn my attention to some issues I care about: Supporting military families, work-life balance, healthy eating, planting that wonderful garden—we had our first salad out of the garden we’re producing—and one of my greatest passions—national and community service.”
The kudos for the First Lady just keep coming. Time magazine included Mrs. Obama in their prestigious annual roundup of The World’s Most Influential People. And guess who wrote the piece? Fellow Chi-town superwoman Oprah Winfrey! Winfrey observes, “[Mrs. Obama] makes us want to be our best selves—and maybe lift a few weights too.” Good stuff.
I’m scheduled to attend the red-carpet event on Tuesday, May 5, in celebration of the issue, so more deets to come.
The First Lady has proven once again that she is just like us. Want proof? “Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I’m still up at 5:15 A.M. taking my dog out. So for everyone who has a child asking for a puppy—you have to want the dog,” warns Mrs. Obama.
The First Lady also reports that she still shuttles Malia and Sasha to play dates and takes them to soccer practice…just like you. Well, except, of course, that she is married to the President.
Just found out that Mrs. Obama is being honored at the Congressional Club’s annual First Lady Luncheon today, April 30. This is the club’s most prestigious event. In 1912, they held a breakfast to honor the President’s wife and the affair transitioned into a luncheon.
Congrats Mrs. Obama!
So remember when I mentioned those Lanvin sneakers the First Lady wore to the Capital Area Food Bank volunteer event? Yes, the ones that cost over $500. Well a very similar pair presently retail at Barneys New York for $540. Before you lose your breath, I must add that they have a sleek shiny cap toe and funky grosgrain ribbon detail.
I wasn’t going to mention them again but they’re getting so much hype on the Web. What do you guys think? Were the sneakers a good option for Mrs. Obama or should she have stayed with her usual ballet flat as Dr. Biden did? Do you think these or any sneakers are worth $540?
I predict that a whole lotta books about about the First Lady and her influence on style are in the works at this very moment. This one, “Michelle Style” (William Morrow), landed on my desk this week and it seems to be pretty good. Insight from Oprah’s BFF Gayle King, style scribes Teri Agins and Robin Givhan and even ESSENCE’s own Mikki Taylor offer their two cents about Mrs. Obama’s fashion sense. The A-Z of Ms. O’s Style at the end is a definite highlight. It’s available on Amazon.com and officially hits stores May 5.
The First Lady, along with congressional spouses and volunteers, fills plastic bags with nonperishable food items at the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C.
“We have an opportunity to shine a bright light on service and what service can do,” said Mrs. Obama before she got to work distributing pasta. Dr. Jill Biden (not pictured) was at the event as well.
UPDATE: Apparently the Lanvin sneakers Mrs. Obama was wearing in this picture retail for over $500! How’s that for high stepping?
I just read on People.com that the First Lady made the mag’s Most Beautiful list for 2009. Here’s what she had to say about her beauty: “I had a father and a brother who thought I was beautiful, and they made me feel that way every single day,” says the Chicago Southside native. “I grew up with very strong male role models who thought I was smart and funny, so I heard that a lot. I know that there are many young girls who don’t hear it.”
Are you surprised that the First Lady made this year’s Most Beautiful list for People? Why or why not?
One of the perks of working at ESSENCE is meeting people who are at the top of their game. Yesterday actor Michael Ealy stopped by to chat it up with the staff (and, yes, he is really that fine in person) so of course I got him to weigh in on the First Lady. Here’s what he had to say about Mrs. Obama:
“I find Michelle Obama refreshing because for the first time in my lifetime, I feel like we have a First Lady who will put her family first; before her own political agenda.” He adds, “Mrs. Obama seems to personify loyalty, intelligence, warmth, and the ability to multitask.”
Well then, Michael. Nicely said, don’t you agree?
The First Lady has hit the ground running. I mean if she’s not at a school talking to a group of kids, then she is hanging out with world leaders or gardening or inviting regular folks to the White House. Did you get your invitation? On Tuesday, April 28, for the historic unveiling of the Sojourner Truth bust in the Capitol Building with the First Lady, sits Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on one side of Mrs. Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on the other.
Veteran actress Cicely Tyson was there too and is said to have left crowds in awe with her dramatic reading of Truth’s famous speech “Ain’t I A Woman.” Our Washington Correspondent Cynthia said Tyson “killed it!”
Fun Fact: Not only is Sojourner Truth the first Black woman to receive such an honor, the actual bust was also designed by a Black female artist, Artis Lane.
From the Michelle Obama look-a-like wigs to folks doing everything to try and get her bangin’ arms, the The First Lady’s influence is widespread. And now there’s even a comic book saluting Mrs. O. The 22-page Michelle Obama comic book will be re-released on April 29 and is available for $3.99 at Amazon.com.
Do you think a Michelle Obama comic book is flattering or just exploitation?
The First Lady attended Easter services at St. John’s Episcopal Church a few weeks ago with the President wearing a floral sheath from Chicago designer Peter Soronen. She finished the look with her signature double strand of pearls and her trusty cardigan.
Mrs. Obama joked to the New York Times about the President’s close watch of her wardrobe: “He’s always asking, ‘Is that new? I haven’t seen that before.’ It’s like, Why don’t you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet.”
Mom-in-Chief Michelle Obama makes it clear what is most important in her life: family. Here she is surrounded by them at the White House on April 13 for the Easter Egg Roll.
Everyone was waiting for the White House pup to arrive ever since the President revealed one was coming on Election Night. Bo, a Portuguese water dog, is now a certified member of the Obama clan. The First Lady told People.com about the puppy’s foot fetish: “He loves to chew on people’s feet.”
Mrs. Obama made her London debut as First Lady in a chartreuse Jason Wu dress topped with a black Michael Kors coat. She used her favorite studded Azzedine Alaia belt to accent the look. The First Lady boarded the plane wearing a Thakoon coat and left wearing this ensemble. Talk about traveling in style…
Remember all the uproar about the First Lady wearing this Azzedine Alaia cardigan to visit Queen Queen Elizabeth II on April 1? I honestly didn’t get the big deal; the ivory and black dress from Isabel Toledo that she paired it with made the look very appropriate in my opinion. However, some folks were quite offended.
What did you guys think?
Isn’t it refreshing to see political couples who look like they actually like each other? Mrs. Obama, joined by the President, rocks a sleek and sophisticated Azzedine Alaia LBD (little black dress) on the red carpet during a NATO event in Baden-Baden, Germany, on April 3.
On March 19 in celebration of Women’s History Month, Mrs. Obama dispatched a group of celebrity women to speak at D.C.-area schools. Debbie Allen, Tracee Ellis Ross, Phylicia Rashad and Alicia Keys were a few of the sisters in attendance.
The First Lady smiles for a camera phone while lending a helping hand at Miriam’s Kitchen, a D.C. soup kitchen that serves daily meals to the needy. On the lunch menu this day (March 5) was mushroom risotto, broccoli, muffins and fruit salad.
The First Lady earned high scores when she spoke to students at Howard University on February 11. Wearing a fuchsia sheath from hometown designer Maria Pinto, the First Lady revealed, “The question I hate the most that we ask of young people is, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I still don’t know, and I’m 45 years old!”
How cool was it to see the President and First Lady checking out a performance of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater back in February? Who doesn’t love “Revelations?” Mrs. Obama gave her black ensemble a little bit of pop with an eye-catching Moschino pearl brooch.
