As the Supreme Court continues to hear arguments over gay marriage, in which a ruling could be history making, celebrities across the nation are tweeting their support including ESSENCE Fest headliner Beyoncé.
Late last night, Beyoncé posted this hand written note to Instagram sharing her support in a rather familiar way. “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it,” she wrote. “#We Will Unite 4 Marriage Equality.”
In recent weeks a number of notable celebrities and public figures have come out in support same-sex marriage. Jay-Z, among the group, shared why he supports gay marriage with CNN saying, “I have always thought of it as something that is still holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against Blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.”
Celebrities lit up social media with their support. Many of them changing their avatars to the red equal sign created by the Human Rights Campaign. Outspoken hip-hop figure Russell Simmons tweeted his support for the moment, “Love is love. Strike down #Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).”
Yesterday, the Supreme Court justices discussed whether or not the Propositions 8, a gay marriage ban in California, was constitutional, reports ABC. Today, the justices will hear augments on the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and woman.
The court is expected to issue a ruling by the end of June.
