Trying to pack Black history into one month is impossible, but every February we take time to celebrate those who came before us and those who continue to do the work. Black History Month is the perfect time to not only consider the historical figures in the Black community, but to also celebrate the different ways we experience and celebrate Blackness onscreen. We’ve rounded up a few titles on Netflix that explore the Black experience, dive into notable moments, and shed light on familiar names. Plus, there’s a few new titles featuring Black leads. Here’s what you should binge during the shortest month of the year:

High Flying Bird
Andre Holland stars in this new Netflix original that tells the story of sports agent Ray Burke, who shakes and changes the basketball industry during a pro basketball lockout. The film premieres February 8.

ReMastered: The Two Killings of Sam Cooke
Netflix’s ReMastered returns with an investigation into the death of Sam Cooke, who passed away December 11, 1964 after being shot in the chest. The episode looks at the circumstances around Cooke’s death and explores possible theories about what could have happened. Watch it February 8.

Strong Island, from filmmaker Yance Ford, investigates the death of Ford’s brother William Ford Jr., who was murdered in 1992 by a white chop shop mechanic. The film explores race, criminal justice, and how the events following William’s death affected Ford and his family. Stream it now.

The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson
For those of you unfamiliar with Marsha P. Johnson, this documentary is the perfect place to start. The film follows activist Victoria Cruz as she investigates the death of Johnson, an activist and prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising. Through Cruz’s investigation and archival footage, viewers learn who Johnson was and just how important she was to the LGBTQ community. You can stream it now.

Recently released on Netflix, the limited series starring Michaela Coel tells the story of a woman, rescued from the Rwandan genocide as a child, who seeks to learn more about her past.
