Oily Skin: How To Avoid Looking Greasy This Summer

Come summer time, no one wants to deal with oily skin. Here are 6 easy ways to tame oily skin from now until fall.

By Virginia Lowman · June 17, 2016October 27, 2020
01
Try A Clay Mask

Ditch your classic sheet mask for a clay mask in the summer time; it will slow the production of oil and keep your skin matte for a longer period. We love this formula from classic skincare line, Borghese. The Fango Active Mud for Face and Body goes on smooth and set on the skin, minimizing pores and reducing shine.

02
Focus on Salicylic Acid

Because oil tends to clog pores, oily skin is often prone to acne. Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare regimen will help clear pores, prevent breakouts and temporarily slow the production of oil to help your skin stay shine-free longer. Try PCA Therapeutic Salicylic Acid Mask morning and night and follow with your favorite SPF or tinted moisturizer.

03
Always Use and SPF

Though you should use sunscreen year-round, it is especially important in the summer time, particularly for oily, acne-prone skin. Look for a formula with mattifying properties. We love this CoverFX Clear Cover Invisible Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 30.

It goes on completely sheer, doesn’t leave an oily/greasy or chalky finish and also brightens and mattifies skin.

04
Switch to a Mineral Powder

Ditch the heavy foundation this summer and opt for a tinted moisturizer or an mineral powder. If you’ve got oily skin, ditch the moisturizer in favor of an spf and opt for the mineral powder instead. We love this option from bareMinerals, All-Over Face Color.

05
Watch How You Moisturize

If you’re really big on night creams or rich, creamy formulas in general, consider switching to a gel-based formula during the warmer months. Massage the formula in to your skin and be mindful of the areas that are usually the oiliest parts of your face, opt to use more SPF than moisturizer in those areas.

06
Up Your Vitamin A Intake

If you needed an excuse to eat more sweet potatoes fries, kale or carrots, here it is! Each of those plants is rich in vitamin A which helps reduce oil production, making your skin less greasy. Of course it’s better to eat them raw, but if you really are craving sweet potato fries, opt to bake them instead; it’s healthier and you’ll preserve more of the sweet potatoes vitamins and nutrients than you would if you fried them.
