Black and deep purple lipstick. Flowing fishtail braids and chic pink eyeshadow. Joan Smalls is a try-it-all (and rock it flawlessly) kind of girl. That makes her an absolutely refreshing presence on the red carpet—and an awesome person to chat with about beauty.  Chica, People En Español‘s new magazine for multicultural Latinas, did just that. In the fun Q & A, the supermodel and Estee Lauder spokesmodel reveals some of her favorite things.

“A lipstick is an accessory. It’s the finishing touch on any look”, she told the magazine. The supermodel, who has her pick from a range of colors, from nude to plum, was most recently spotted at this month’s MET Gala with deep amethyst lipstick—gorgeous. She also wore a shockingly chic black lipstick on the red carpet last fall (paired with an otherwise simple face, the look was stunning). But it seems one of her favorite looks is classic red. “Whenever I wear a deep red, I feel mysterious and flirty,” says Smalls in the piece. For a Smalls-approved deep cherry try Esteé Lauder’s New Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick, in Red Ego, $30.

Smalls also cautions against matching eye makeup to outfit. She calls the beauty faux pas a “big mistake.” We’d have to agree with the supermodel on that one.
