Cinephiles, come forward.

For those of us who tune into the Academy Awards, we see how all the hard work and preparation, from the hosts to the presenters, performers, and crew, comes to life for Tinseltown’s biggest night. But very few get the cool opportunity to actually witness that preparation in action. This year, ESSENCE was on hand to take in the magic, speaking with Emmy-nominated music director Michael Bearden, and even trying out the bites for the Governors Ball with celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck. Most recently, we were present as the stars converged for one of the event’s rehearsals on Saturday, March 14, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

To start, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer told us, when asked, that the vibe of the room is “Human, organic, zen, mid-century,” and full of “intention.” It makes sense, considering the theme of the night is “the human touch,” something especially meaningful in the age of AI.

The rehearsal experience also gave journalists the chance to connect with some of the organization’s leaders, including Kramer as well as Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor, who shared her excitement about tonight’s show. (Kramer also raved about the Sinners musical performance rehearsal, which took place on Friday.)

Stacy Ike, who has served as our social correspondent for the 2026 awards season, sat among 11 other journalists, watching the magic unfold. That included appearances from host Conan O’Brien, who rehearsed a bit you won’t want to miss. There were also some nostalgic reunions viewers will enjoy, like the cast of Bridesmaids, including Maya Rudolph, whose comedic timing remains top-tier. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor also reunited as presenters—and to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of Moulin Rouge! For all the reunited talent, it seemed like no time had passed since they were last on set together, judging by their easy chemistry.

One fascinating realization, in between watching the who’s who of Hollywood, including last year’s winners and this year’s nominees, run through their lines, is just how many people behind the scenes it takes to make the magic happen. Hundreds were moving around the theater, working. And many members of the team, according to those on hand, have been part of the Academy Awards production for years.

As you tune into the show tonight, rooting for your favorites to take home an Oscar, just know that it’s the so-called little people who make this moment happen. They may not get to take the stage at “showtime,” but there wouldn’t be a “showtime” without them.

All that said, we’re excited to tune into the 98th Academy Awards. We know who we’re rooting for. How about you?
