During his acceptance speech, the veteran actor dedicated his win to Fences playwright August Wilson, his fellow actors who often go unrecognized and his on-screen leading lady.
Scoring big for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role as Troy Maxon in the film, Fences, Washington was overcome with emotion while accepting his latest win.
“I’m a God-fearing man. I’m supposed to have faith, but I didn’t have faith, God bless you all, all the other actors. I said ‘you know that young boy is going to win, Denzel, you ain’t gonna win’ so I didn’t even prepare, but I am prepared!” he said much to the audiences jubilation.

Washington, having previously been nominated six times by the SAG-AFTRA, gave special recognition to the actors who work so hard but often get overlooked in the bright lights of Hollywood.
“SAG, listen, we’re just actors,” he stated. “I’m famous and all that kinda stuff but I have the same fear opening night or first preview that anyone else has. We all have the same job and this is not a testament to me but it’s a testament obviously to August Wilson, Stephen Henderson, Mykelti [Williamson], Saniyya [Sidney], Jovan [Adepo], you know, the guys that don’t get recognized. So fellas, here we here!”
Before leaving stage, our December cover star had to shout out the film’s leading lady, fellow Fences castmate Viola Davis.
“One last thing, two–Viola Davis!”
Congrats Denzel on your first and big SAG win!
