FX’s OJ Simpson biopic mini-series, The People v. OJ: An American Crime Story, may have been controversial, but it certainly delivered – thanks to the talent.

The 60-minute series won big tonight with Sterling K. Brown kicking off the ultimate winning streak by taking home the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series for his performance as prosecutor Christopher Darden.

Minutes later, Sarah Paulson, who played prosecutor Marcia Clark, walked away with the award for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Limited Series just moments before Courtney B. Vance took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series for his performance as the one and only Johnny Cochran.

Best remembered for his prominent role in OJ Simpson’s acquittal and infamous for the famed saying, “If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit,” Cochran came back to life through Vance’s portrayal of the late, very gifted attorney.

Vance continued to steal the show with an unforgettable acceptance speech that gave everyone serious #relationshipgoals. “To the woman that rocks my chain!” the FX actor said with a smile glowing from ear to ear while referencing wife Angela Basset.

Courtney B. Vance recently sat down with ESSENCE to talk about landing the role of Cochran in the hit show.

“It was January, pretty early in pilot season, and…I thought, was a good audition,” says Vance. ” Now, I knew that there were already a few names attached to it…I think, at this point in time, Sarah Paulson, maybe [John] Travolta and Courtney [B. Vance] were already attached…if not Cuba [Gooding, Jr.], as well. And so I thought, ‘Okay, they’re looking for names, so the chances of me getting this particular role may be minimal.’ But I felt like [I was prepared].”

You can read Courtney’s full interview in the October issue of ESSENCE, on stands now. And be sure to check out his new show, This Is Us, on NBC premiering this Tuesday at 10:00 pm EST.
