It has been a big year for Ava DuVernay. Just a few months ago, she made history as the first Black female director nominated for a Golden Globe for her Oscar-nominated movie, Selma, and she continues to pave the way for Black women everywhere: She now has her sights set on blazing the television trail.
Through the new series, DuVernay hopes to illuminate the power that is Black women.
“We are glorious,” she said on our ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood red carpet referring to the essence of Black women. “We are majestic. We are gorgeous. And we are present.”
Though many feel like Black women are underrepresented in the film industry, it’s important that we continue to recognize our own beauty and power.
“Whether or not they’re celebrating us, whether or not they’re putting us on air, it doesn’t change the fact that we’re here,” she said.
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
