We like to look good—and love to do good—with charitable beauty finds that aid breast cancer research and education during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Here are the editor’s picks.
I love a good deal, like a beauty gift-with-purchase. Ditto for these treats, whose sales further breast cancer research. High on my list is ultrafeminine Aquolina Pink Sugar Eau de Toilette Natural Spray ($34, fragrancenet.com). Purchase this “pink” scent from Fragrancenet.com during October, and the company will donate 15 percent of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Every woman also needs a classic fragrance on her vanity. My choice is Estée Lauder’s Beautiful ($64, Estée Lauder counters nationwide). October sales of this Pink Ribbon Collection scent directly benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For my travels, there’s Lather Sandalwood Rose Soap ($8, lather.com), an all-natural, olive oil–based soap infused with rose petals. Five dollars from each sale goes to the breast cancer programs at City of Hope, a leading research and treatment center. I’m also buying multiples of Borba Nutraceutical Lip Tint in Lovely ($16, borba.com). Its rich shea butter and antioxidant formula will keep my lips nourished and pretty all winter long. And because 10 percent of the proceeds from the sales benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, it’s a guilt-free splurge!
Beauty to Go
Because of my hectic work schedule, I’m always making myself up on the go. Thanks to butter London, the perfect duo for a quick manicure is always at my fingertips: an elegant shade of pink polish, 3 Free Nail Lacquer in Pink Ribbon ($12, butterlondon.com), and a great-smelling hand and nail cream, Mango Peach Hand & Nail Crème ($18, butterlondon.com). But the best part is that during the month of October, butter London will donate 100 percent of profits from these two special products to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. I must admit that I’m also slightly obsessed with pearly-pink eye shadows. Too Faced Cosmetics cofounder Jerrod Blandino created the limited edition Betsy Baby eye shadow ($17, sephora.com) in honor of his best friend, Betsy Olum of Sephora, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She was successfully treated and is now healthier than ever. Use as a highlighter or wear alone to glow inside and out. For each Betsy Baby eye shadow sold, $9 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. And be sure to get your hands on this cute lip gloss from Jane Iredale (In The Pink PureGloss for Lips, $19, janeiredaledirect.com). For each tube of this universally flattering gloss sold, Iredale Mineral Cosmetics will donate $2 to the nonprofit organization Living Beyond Breast Cancer.
I’m not that handy with a blow dryer—at least not with my own hair. My efforts produc
e a frizz fest rather than a smooth curtain of silk. So you can understand why I
was surprised to discover that there’s a dryer out there that allows me, without any assistance, to achieve silky salon results. The FHI Heat Nano Weight Pro 1900 Turbo Professional Salon Hair Dryer ($195, 877-FHI-HEAT) is extremely lightweight, letting me focus the heat where it needs to be as I apply the right tension with my brush. Now I’m self-sufficient with drying—never thought I’d say that. More important, FHI Heat is donating $1 from each sale of five of its styling tools, including this amazing dryer, to Pink-Link (pink-link.org), a virtual forum that hosts the only online database of breast cancer survivors. The site also provides professional support in the areas of nutrition, fitness, holistic health care and skin care. Makeup artist Sonia Kashuk has teamed up with Target for the cause with a limited edition makeup essentials collection. I love the Stroke of Genius Purse Brush Set ($20, target.com) which has six brushes in a sleek faux-crocodile case. The collection includes a cosmetic bag, lip palette and blush brush. Through November 4, 15 percent of the purchase price of these items will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Thank goodness for these tools; they’re truly working overtime.
